Double Amp or amp the ipod?

Hey Head-Fi,

I'm a long time reader and this is my first post. I have modded Grado 225i and a HRT Head Streamer connected to my laptop which is playing lossless audio. I also listen to ipod 5.5.

I'm wanting to upgrade either my home system or my ipod system with an amp. I started off thinking the E11 would work well to upgrade my ipod listening, but after some study on the forum I thought my money would be better spent upgrading my home setup and getting a desktop amp. Now the problem. My DAC (HRT Headstreamer) is also an amp and has no line out, so if I connect that to a better amp I'll be "double amping". I'm on a tight budget and can't afford to buy a new DAC and a new amp unless I save my money for awhile.

The other idea would be to just amp the ipod (playing lossless) with a nice desktop amp. Which would get me better SQ? Send the sound through a dac and two amps, or just send it through the ipod and one amp?

My amp budget is definitely sub $200, but would prefer sub $100 . . . of course, I seem to shoot myself in the foot by making cheap upgrade after cheap upgrade after cheap upgrade :) Any and all ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

The cheapest external DAC that connects to the iPod's LOD port is the HRT iStreamer, $155.

The Fiio E11 ($65) and a Fiio L cable ($10) is about as much I would personally spend for an iPod.

I'm sure the Grado 225i (32-Ohm) is very easy to drive, amplifier wise.

I think for a small budget, it's not worth try to upgrade your current laptop setup.

I'm assuming you using a Windows laptop, have you tried using foobar2000 to play your audio (music) files?

I'm using j.river Media Center 18 and have been very happy with it.
