and spur is right. Gotta have the right size and model fit, or the tips are useless.

If that is the case you'll be right at home with the xba4 then. Be warned tho that it's extremely picky with sources: impedance related.

Yes, I do find comply's change the sound a bit, for better or worse... The ts series has the least effect on sound if you want to be safe.

Yea I am still trying to figure out in simple terms what a dark signature sounds like because the xba4 is darker than the 3's.

I can always get the xba30's as well but I am very curious about the 40, mostly because of that soundstage which I love being enveloped in music.

Soundstage wise, the 40's aren't that much more than the 30's, and the soundstage of the 30's is relatively even with my old TF10's and UE 7's. The 7's slightly more, and the TF10's almost a match.

I owned the GR07, the HiFiMan RE-ZERO, and had the opportunity to hear the RE-0 and RE-262, and though the GR07 sounded pretty decent, the bass left me wanting, and the fit was horrible for my ears. The HiFiMan's lacked the energy I like to hear in my sound signature. For all the transparency and details, none of them made me want to listen to them for extended periods, because they suck the energy and fun right from your music, and deliver ZERO bass response and MINUS ZERO sub bass response, and these are supposedly high quality DYNAMICS!? The Sony XBA-30's are even superior to the UE TF10.

I think I just had a revalation of sorts, I was messing around with my tips and I used the light blue hybrids (largest tips) and if I just put them in my ear lightly I get a seal and my music sounds clear, crisp and bassy with great isolation.

Before I was shoving them in deep in my ears with the green tips and had to keep messing with them because I would lose a bit of seal, wow I feel dumb lol

After 5 days of auditioning the XBA-30's, i'm leaning towards selling mine. The tips provided, and some other silicones and flanges I have, don't provide a decent seal, or feel weird with my defective left ear, and the housing of the 30's rubs on my ear and makes it sore. When I put comply tips on them, they fit beautifully and comfortably, but the treble has the ugliest "metallic" sound. It's terrible. So I'm going to try your experiment, and see if it works for me. If not, I'm probably going to give up the XBA-30 experiment. I'm finding that though the over all presentation is superb, and the sound livelier and more exciting than the TF 10, the soundstage and airyness is sub standard for a triple driver, and the detail retrieval not much better than my IE 800. So let's see...

A couple things:

1.Do you have the xba30ip or just the 30? If you have the ip I would buy them from you.

2.I never heard the TF10 but I still cant figure out this "metallic" sound say many say, maybe my ears just arent used to other iems.

3.You say the detail is not much better than your ie800, keep in mind that is a $1000 iem! lol

4.Try the different tips and see which one you can just put in very lightly and get a seal, as I said I am suprised because before I was sticking them in real deep, now they dont even hardly go in but I have a seal and they stay in fine.

I have the 30 tips. The light blues with foam, the purple with foam, and then green foam, and then the non foam hybrids on down. The metallic sound is there. It's not present in my UE 700's or my Altec Lansings. Seems like I'm looking for that triple BA that has a natural sound throughout the spectrum. I got some nice dynamics that do great and offer clean natural sound and bass response. Now for that BA. Where are you?

Oh I meant if you have the xba30 IP version with the iPhone mic, I am in the US.

As for a BA with clean balanced sound I hear the ortofon's have a great balanced sound which are BA, Etymotic in general also are known for balance.

Which dynamics do you recommend that are high SQ with nice balanced sound?

I hear so much about the gr07 its crazy! How do they compare with the xba30? Only thing is that I need a mic.

The gr07's are lush. lushness and detail that really take you on a sonic discovery ride. They fit me wrong, since I have a misshapen left ear canal, but overall they have a better soundstage than the 30's, and far superior highs to the 30's, while giving up depth and refinement in the lows to the 30's. Both are silky smooth mids.

Nice! Right now I am debating getting the xba40 for $180 but I am not sure, I really am used to a mic so I dont want to give that up, I do like my xba3's though, they do the job for most genres.

from what I've gathered from reading not just this thread, but from reviews from other sites and amazon reviews, the XBA-30's are rated higher than the 40's. Apparently the tonal balance is better, and the sound signature is preferred in the 30's. I dunno?? I've never owned a 4 driver IEM before. Just triples with the XBA-30, UE TF 10, and UE 7 Pro.
