Watched/listened to Ironman 3 with the Mikros 90 last night.

Sounded very BIG, very DETAILED and very 3-DIMENSIONAL with the MLs.

They are my "one-stop" headphones for now.

[Still don't miss the HE-6, Lors, even with the UPOCC copper cable.  But--who knows?--with the advent of the beta 22, I might give the HEs and the Sennheiser HDs another spin.]

You are on Sennheiser's and Hifiman's watchlist now...they will no longer sell you any of their mode.  You could try to get a pair in the sale  forums though...

Have been seriously thinking about the K550, even though I too had/have foresworn any further experimentation with AKGs.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

this mod on the akg should help

The beta 22 is in, the Mikros 90 are on and the verdict is forthcoming.

Will let the amp warm up for several hours before divulging comment.

Going down the rabbit hole.

Received my ML90's yesterday from Newegg, one day delivery standard shipping, shipped on Monday arrived on Tuesday from California to Arizona, Newegg is frakin awesome.

Installed a 6 ft. Auvio cable, the cheap one that I purchased for less than $3 from Radio Shack. Began burn-in this morning in my usual fashion with music on older Philips CD player on repeat mode. May actually check SQ in three to four hours. On initial listening to set burn-in level it sounded mid to high centric a a little threadbare.

Actually read instructions that came with headphone. I am amazed that Martin-Logan says to burn-in headphones from 15-30 hours before critical listening. This probably comes from experience from being a great loudspeaker company. Most good speaker companies will give you a time frame for burn-in before any critical listening takes place, usually 24-48 hours or even longer.

Get back with you soon. I hope to do burn-in at least 4-5 days if I can be patient enough. Happy Listening.

Preliminary amp-matching results:

The beta 22 (preset w/+5db gain) is not a good match with the Mikros 90.  [I was forewarned that this might be the case.]  Audible hum, sharp in the treble and overall a bit thin.  Oh, well, live and learn, aye?

The Ultrasone HFI-780 fare much better.  Still an audible hum, but this is a pretty nice match with the HFI-780.  Quick, comparatively smooth, layered, transparent, large airy soundstage and engaging.  80s R&R/Alternative sounds jammin' [Yes: "Owner of a Lonely Heart" at the moment, followed by Ray Parker, Jr.: "Ghostbusters"].

So far--the Lehmann BCL isn't here yet--the Fitz-improved [hybrid, w/three--count 'em THREE--gawgess 6SN7s] Bada PH-12 is at the top of the amp hill for driving the Mikros 90.

The beta 22 is a well-established and well-reviewed DIY amp.

I got this 2-channel version, beautifully built by cfcubed:

I am listening to Gary Burton: "Crystal Silence" from a 1988 JVC World Class Music compilation.  Wow!!  How I wish the beta drove the Mikros 90 as well as it is driving the Ultrasones right now!!  Can't believe how well the mallet strikes are resolved on this track!

Hum has also subsided appreciably with warm-up.

Denon DVD-1940CI [w/SID disc mat]-->Neotech UPOCC interconnects-->DIY power cord (It IS thick and red.)-->Beta 22-->DakiOm F203 (headphone jack feedback stabilizer--older version)-->Teds UPOCC silver cable (pictures forthcoming for cagin)-->MikrosHypedBass-modded Mikros 90

[*EDIT:] The modded Mikros 90 sound better than the stock pair with the beta.  Just fired up Gary Burton ["Crystal Silence"] again and the vibe solo is super-finely detailed with the MLs.  Tone is luscious.  "Fat Lady" sounds pretty good now, too.  Will try some more jazz--and maybe some chamber music--later.  Have to take the dog for a walk, then start the taxes.

. . . the story of my life: high impedance amps and low impedance cans or vice versa . . . a pathos unique to Head-Fiers

"It doesn't sound solid-state, it sounds like music... takes you so close... doesn't get any better than this."  by R Samuel..?

so not to worry...just put it into the oven.

======

Might sandwich the Bada inbetween for some honest-to-goodness pure Class A FUN.

Right now, though, I am at my house.  My best gear(s)--including the Bada--are at my apartment.

Hum is probably RF due to the power cord running across the back of my Dell monitor LOL.

What a makeshift arrangement right now!  But impatience has gotten the better of me.  Careful placement protocol has gone right out the door!

The amp has definitely settled down over the last few hours.

I'm gonna love the Mikros 90 in this set up, even if it kills me!!  : )

Masahiro Sayama: "Quarter Cooker" (JVC) sounds very, very nice with the modded Mikros 90.

Long story.

Ended up taking work in another locale after a long stint on the unemployment line.  [another long story]

Two lives.  Leave my home and wife at 03:00 on Monday; come back from work at 18:30 on Friday.

My apartment is minimalist: a pad on the floor and three chairs, but of course my audio gear takes up most of the space(!).

Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Further Out: "Far More Drums" sounds really nice with the HFI-780 and the beta 22.  So do the stock Mikros 90, with the Pipeline ET-4 cable, now [great solo drum work by Joe Morello].  "Unsquare Dance" is another great cut from this album.   :)
