Martin Logan Mikros 90 On-Ear Headphones - Page 248

I was curious so I opened up the right ear cup (no wires :regular_smile :) today at work and looked closely at the material covering the HOLE on the stereomicroscope at the office.  Couldn't get any photos, but the material is definitely porous, and more cloth-like than anything, but maybe not woven...more like spun material.  The recent posts seem to indicate that everyone now believes this should have been obvious.  True acoustic cloth is transparent to sound so this must be something slightly different as it is clearly meant to control the air flow into the driver.  We really need to try some of the mods without removing this material from over the hole.  I do not have Mikros#2 yet to mod, so it won' be me.

I found this self stick 2 mm foam material at W-Mart in the kid's craft aisle...medium density, closed cell I believe.  I f any one wants to try it PM me and I'll send some in the post.  I have 5 or 6 sheets that are about 9" x 12".

Bonus...comes in a variety of primary colors, as well as black and white.

Clearly you didn't read what I added to that comment

What is the difference between your perception of the sound and the actual sound? How can you tell the difference between those two with anything in life? Do you think you perceive the color yellow as the same color as I perceive it? LETS GET PHILOSOPHICAL BITCHES ITS THE ONLY THING THIS THREAD NEEDS!!! MLM90s! the choice of philosophers!

But really who cares? Arent you spending your money on gear to enjoy a perception of sound? or are you trying to buy what others perceive as good?

Yes, your ears adapt to changes in sound presentations. So yes, my perception of the sound of the headphone will change over time. You get my point.

but you didn't get mine...

how is that any different from the headphone itself changing? What does it matter if the headphone is changing or your brain is changing or the pads are changing? Let it change for a while, let it converge - let your brain get used to the phone before you start changing the sound even more.

When everyone says the mods benefit it, why would I wait?

Opening up the hole is like adding another 10-12inch driver into the equation...

when it is opened, the bass VOLUME, RESONANCE is HUGE-ly INCREASED.

taming it and getting it to sound coherent n euphonic is the challenge/goal,

to suit INDIVIDUAL taste.

Without opening that hole,

the existing sticker already set a LIMIT on the sound/volume/bass frequency (what u are hearing NOW)

what can be done inside the cup, is to color the sound, modulate slight impact force.

cant really open up the soundstage drastically.

thats my experience todate.

Feel free to experiment n i will be delighted if shown otherwise.

i encourage more people to explore this amazing Mikros !!

Didn't they also say burnin would benefit it?

Why must we rush through life? Why not take the long route and enjoy the journey?

You could always try microwaving them and seeing if it accelerates the burnin

I am pretty sure that you have it right as the material over the hole clearly has a design function.  I am guessing that the engineers used the choice of the material covering the hole and its degree of sonic transparency to "tune" the 90's.  I will try a mod or two (if the USPS ever delivers #2...no way I am tinkering with #1) but probably on a bit slower, more conservative pace than some of you more adventurous souls.

Rad modders that you are.  ;)
