Martin Logan Mikros 90 On-Ear Headphones - Page 121

Alright, Jane and the warmth of the CALs are now officially lulling me to sleep. Have to say that I'm thinking that these will make for a nice complement to the 90s. Hopefully after messing around, my second pair of 90s will give me something in the middle, and I'll be more than happy. .

Also it's been an hour and comfort is pissing me off already lol, this is like HD25 level of vicegrip on muh head. SFWALCER! How's your over-ear mod? Any changes in SQ?

^ Almost the same or even some improvements as i have already noted here.

With the pad over pad mod the soundstage seems to be lifted a bit with better slightly clarity cuz the stock pads are no longer pressed against your ears as much while the bass quality/quantity is no affected whatsoever.

So they virtually sound about the same as the stock pads, maybe even slightly better sounding but the overall comfort is improved quite a bit for me. Ears still get a tiny tiny bit sore after wearing them for more than 1 hour but it is not nearly as bad as in stock form.

^ The Go-DAP is only an amp, does not have an DAC. Thought it did initially as well cuz it made my crappy nano sound so much better, but realized later on it was just an external amp which is able to bypass the weak internal amp of the nano/ ipods/ ipods using the 30 pin LOD.

Oh and for bigger/ fatter ipods, etc that might not fit cuz the Go-DAP was only made for the old iphone 3GS, you might need to grab one of these adapters.

Bought one on 2/2/2014 and got them in today all the way from the Philippines so not too bad on the shipping speed. :)

Just ordered another one but in white and 99 cents shipped all the way here is sweet haha. : P

They don't give you any track number though.

Martin Logan quoted me $7.50 each.  Don't know about the shipping...

Unless u unlock...

LorsMikros :

Items needed :

1. Furniture base selfstick felt  1inch x 1 inch ( this is a HARD felt..not the soft felt on snooker tables )

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Waxman-Heavy-Duty-Felt-Pads-self-stick-1in-square-/300743982186

2. BlueTac

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bostik-801103-Blu-Tack-Handy/dp/B0001OZI70

3. 2inch x 2inch CARVEN leather ( i am using a thin, slightly stiff leather, not the soft fluffy kind )

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 100

4. Thin foam that came with the Mikros Box

5. Scissors, Cuttingblade, spectacles-screwdriver, torchlight, ruler, double side tape.

Steps :

1. Rip open the pads :P

2. Find a clean table, unscrew the 3 tiny screws on the left cup...open the cup slowly,

do not break the attached THIN wire. (Rest the headfone on the table..n try to rest the driver on the pad u just peeled off)

3. Take a razorblade n peel off the thin stickytape in the center, under the driver, to expose THE HOLE.

(Do not tear this stickytape.. stick it to one side of the plastic for later use, in the event u want to get back to original stock status)

( See post by MAXX the PIONEER miner, for indepth HOLE exploration post #10272835)

Caution : do NOT dig out any earwax or gung u see INSIDE that hole, it has a birthright, leave it alone :P )

4. plaster the sidewall of each cup all around with Blue Tac as above pic. ( i chose to plaster up the hole where the metal headband joins to the cup too )

( to dampen vibrations in the cup )

5. Take a piece of leather, trimmed down to size to fit to the shape of the base, n doubleside tape it down to the base of each cup.

( without the leather u will hear a metal tinge to the sound )

6. Cut a 6/8inch by 1/2inch felt, and paste it at the lower end of each cup. (to tighten the bass)

7. Cut out a 1.5 inch round thin foam with an inner circle of 1/2inch. ( to fill out the mids )

8. Doubleside tape it to the back of each driver, avoid covering the HOLE. ( stick over whatever protruding wires :P )

9. Closed up and screw down the driver, use a torch to align the screwholes if needed.

10. Refit the Pads.

11. Put on your favorite music n ENJOY !!!

Notes :

The mod is tuned to my ipad Gen 1, using stockcable. Works on a SansaClip+ too.

If u have a portable amp, this modded can will sound even more powerful, even spectacular...imho.

The above mod is reversible..

just tape back that HOLE..with the original sticky tape..and u are back to STOCK status.

Almost RISK FREE ...unless u break the wires, or lose a screw ..somehow. :P

U can finetune the mod by increasing /reducing the size of felt to suit your gears.

Pm me your questions/feedbacks on this mod :P

===================================================================

===================================================================

IF U DO NOT WISH TO PEEL THE STICKER off the hole...THEN TRY THIS MOD instead

Simple HOLE-SOME mod :

Cut 2 piece of thin foam size 1 1/2 inch. X 3/4 inch , found in your Mikros pack.
Open up the 3 screws...without peeling the sticker off the hole.
Doubleside tape the foam to the base of the cup.
Cut a 6/8inch x 1/2inch hard felt, doubleside stick to lower end of each cup.

Enjoy a sound that's more relaxed, less sibilant...without sacrificing the clarity n slam on the bass is increased!

Photos to follow..or use your imagination.

============================================

ALternatives :

u can switch the above leather or foam base for CORK chops,

for a crispier overall sound if u wish..tune it to your gears.

( my favourite :P )

=========================================

Adding on Alphapads from Mr Speakers,

for added stability n lambskin comfort to snoozzzz in :P

It also angled the drivers if thats a thing with u.

Just sandwich foamtapes all around the greatwall.

This added investment would double up your cost,

but its worth the expansion in soundstage.

ENJOY your Hi END LO COST Mikros !!

^ LMAO each as in each pad, or each set??? Cuz if it is each pad ahhhhhhhhh i see their hustle now. Selling these Logans for dirt cheap so they will make a killing on them replacement pads in the near future.

... dat foresight and future business sense. :D

Each pad is $7.50.

It seems as though the 90 is gonna take on the same sort of modding legend as the T50RP (I can see it coming now).

Items needed :

Vmoda 69in cable, preferably in black.

Monster Ncredible Ntune pads (optional)

Furniture base selfstick felt mat  1inch x 1 inch

BlueTac

Steps :

1. Rip open the pads :P

2. Find a clean table, unscrew the 3 tiny screws on the left cup...open the cup slowly, do not break the attached THIN wire.

3. Take a razorblade n peel off the thin stickytape off the centre, under the driver, to expose THE HOLE.

4. Cut the 1inch x 1inch felt into half... and stick it to the base of the exposed cup, aligned to the direction of the metal spook.

( see foto )

5. Roll 3 pieces of half inch Blue Tac and stick onto the sides of the inner cupwall, making sure they are stuck firmly

onto the walls. ( again see pic ..humpfff )

6. Repeat for Right cup.

another angle view of the inner cup Blue tac position.

7. Reassemble...if  u can get all the screws to align..zzz

8. Replace pads...

9. Plug in the VModa cable

10.. Select your most bass heavy music..n ENJOY the TIGHT BIG BASS !!

Failed attempts :

Tried thin felt ring on base..too much resonance. sustain is too long..bass hanging in the air.

Tried thick half inch FOAM in centre of base, slightly better focus but bass impact still rounded n bleeds to the mids.

The theory/conjecture/BS :

the harder FELT(instead of foam or cotton) in the centre, cushion the first reflection off the centre hole against the opposite  basewall.. without rounding off the impact too much.

The standing waves reverberating around the cup is dispersed by the BlueTac..resulting in a clean sounding bass through a bigger chamber.

Testings :

Ran through my testmusic from jazz to pops to classicals...passed my hearing test :P

Other cans :

(this was implemented on the Denon D1100 with 50mm drivers.. with great success, if u have one...do the same )

Credit : Goes to trial n error n leftovers in my drawer. :P

Disclaimer : It works on my setup.. u tune yours until it works for u...now go get some BASSS!!

^

^ +1 it's gonna reach dat legendary status MUCH quicker cuz they are discontinued just like Bruce Lee's early death before he even truly became famous worldwide. THE LEGEND LIVES!!!

If u open up the can, like what Maxx said, the sound we heard is strictly from/above the drivers+pads onwards..

the base half of the cup is effectively sealed off by the sticker to the hole.

Modding/unsealing the base of the cups allow us to tapp it as a bass-box...

since the mod, i have tested out QUEENs, MJ, J Lo, DestinyChild, Kitaro, etc

Vocals intimate, clear highs, big clear textured bass with hardly any bleeding into the mids, or resonance...if any.

Deep spacious full blown orchestration very impressive to my ears.

i have not heard any annoying song in my albums yet..for the last hour.

Give it a shot ok guys..ENJOY !

Was I hallucinating? About 6 hours ago when checking out the thread via my phone, there were pages of hate-the-90's posts. They were in this thread, right? If so, does anyone know why they were nuked?

Oh, and @Lorspeaker, as Sf said...

your fone was hallucinating... :P

======

am i hallucinating...am hearing more frontal presence/presentation of the music.

The bassbox is throwing out more depth, my brain is interpreting it frontalwise..oooooooo weeee.

another hypebassing lolz

=======

Putting the modded HypedbassMikros under the full weight of the crushing Fanfare by Copland...

it is holding up..the drivers are reverberating..shaking on my ears,

no tin canish bass...

this is subterraneanBASSSS..

guys...shooot me !!

I got em for free. I sent them an email 5 days ago inquiring about replacement parts and the service tech guy replied back to me the next morning saying that he'd send me the pads and cable. I emailed him back around noon and he mailed them that day, the 14. Got em yesterday.
