Martin Logan Mikros 90 On-Ear Headphones - Page 91

Pipeline ET-4:

*clarity

*"snapped-into" focus

*speed

*vivacity

FiiO RC MH1:

*ease

*liquidity

*slight "warmth"

*lushness

I am not completely convinced yet, but the Pipeline may have the edge, in absolute terms, in frequency extension or at least at remaining flatter out on the frequency extremes.

ET-4 edges out the MH1 in PRaT. MH1 edges out the ET-4 in smoothness.

Had a great listen with the MH1 and Guess Who, Supertramp.  The FiiO does seem to give the R&R tracks a little nudge of warmth and push that is subtle, but noticeable.  Also great with David Chesky's "Club del Sol".  The sound stage literally sounds more "settled" with the FiiO, in that vocals seem to be placed lower in space than with the ET-4.  Perhaps a little more seductive in the lower mids, too (MH1).

Mikros 90 = cable roller's dream = tube roller's dream.

With this, HPH-200, and HSR-1000 being so great at under $100, I'm wondering if I'll ever need to buy anything over $100.

Where is the picture or post on how to position these?  I think I have them positioned properly, but want to check.

Give them at least 200 hours to burn in and then lose the stock cable.

Just a tiny bit more bass quantity with the same quality. HAH!

The FiiO RC MH1 will give you that tincture of added bass presence you crave methinks.

Comparable quality . . . well . . .

Yes 1+ for the fiio cable 😎
Yo pataburd, you should add the V-Moda Cable.

This is what shall happen in the future:
Its the year 2014, when the human race realizes the audio quality, the sheer dominance if Martin Logan's Mikros 90. The Mikros 100 Over Ear is released, along with the Mikros 70 in ear.

Every headphone except the ML is discontinued, leading to their self destruct. The Momentum, HP50, HE-6, even the K702/DT880/HD650, are all destroyed in the day of reckoning (what the New Testament described, the Revelation).

The remaining owners of the Mikros 90 asert dominance and authority in the aftermath, though the ML is undiscontinued. Instead of people buying different headphones, everyone buys cables, and amplifiers.

That is my prophecy.

^ I am not quite sold on the FiiO cable yet, there is added fullness, some bass boost, and some lifted staging hence it sounds like there is a bit more air and more musical, but the bass quality is not really that great in quality to me. Feels almost kinda dry/boxy instead of the lush, well textured and full yet transparent bass that my old ATH WS99 does so damn well. This was the reason i sold my Philips X1s despite they had big, deep bass, it was lacking in texture and sounded kinda boxy.

Will have to give the FiiO cable some more spins, cuz have been burning them in. But for me i still prefer the stock cable sound more, cuz it sounds more unique and special despite it could appear thinner/leaner when compared to the FiiO cable. The Logan magic is what i like to call it from the stock cables is more overt/ apparent due to its tighter, more clean, lean punch and more crisp attributes..................

Will see how i like the FiiO cable with more play tyme and burn-in, cuz still loves these Logan as is butt naked stock. :veryevil:

Will do - I'll post impressions when I receive them. Right now I've got the "glandularly-challenged" kid in a candy store thing happening - I can't wait for delivery! I will just keep suffering with my AKG-K172HD's for the time being (not exactly suffering - the combo of those with the Bravo Audio Ocean is shockingly good). I have a NOS Amperex Bugle Boy 12AU7 in place of the stock tube in the Ocean, and it took that modest little thing up the food chain several notches over the stock tube. Fleshes out the bass in the K172HD's while making the mids/highs a smidge more liquid, transparent, refined, and spacious. Interested to see if the Mikros 90's will play well with that amp. If not, I have the Audio-GD NFB-11.32 and the Audio-GD NFB-6 as other options.

Have you had/tried the Pipeline ET-1? Doesn't seem the same as the ET-4 though. Nice colors on the ET-1. I'll probably play it safe and get an ET-4 in the red. Need a normal plug at least for some sources that don't line up with the Mikros plug and distorts unless I pull it out or the speaker doesn't shut off etc but the signature tweak also sounds good.

With what are you driving the Mikros 90?

Between the hybrid Bada PH-12 (w/1x GE 6SN7GTA & 2x Tung-Sol 6SN7GTB), the SS KMF Audio (run out of the EVS-modded Oppo DV-970HD) and even the headphone out from the Linn Intek, what I am getting from the Mikros 90 partnered with the FiiO RC MH1 sounds FAR from dry.  It actually strikes me as moist.

Sounds like the Pipeline ET-4 should be to your liking, then.

In absolute terms, I think the ET-4 betters the MH1 in extension, clarity and speed--and maybe absolute resolution, so I can understand your point, I think.    But I agree that the FiiO develops more of a pop-leaning sound signature.

But the FiiO brings a "red-wine-and-candlelight" card to the table.

How likely is it that the Pipeline fits the Mikros? I'm toying around with the idea of getting both the fiio and pipeline but i don't have the stuff to make the pipeline fit if it's too big

^ Welp if you must know.... for portable i use this set up.

... venturecraft amp with my 4th gen ipod nano and 5th gen ipod classic.

The 4th gen nano is more of the clean, tighter, more crisp sounding with a smaller soundstage while my 5th gen ipod classic has bigger staging, more 3D, but is softer more spacious sounding. The Logans sound best with my crappy beatup nano cuz the overall presentation has more focus, sounds more dynamic and snappier and is more engaging despite it is "leaner/thinner" in the bass department.

My desktop setup is all over the place. Have a Audinst MX1 amp/dac config ( my most neutral/ balanced rig), the FiiO E17 amp/dac hooked into my Sansa Clip + (kinda on the warm side but is powerful, not the most neutral/ transparent cuz even the venturecraft amp sounds better to me via my ipods), my cheapo ELE DAC (which is on the bright side with good overall balance but nothing to write home about), and my new Schiit Vali (so far it seems pretty uncolored for the most part for a tube amp, only slight hit of warmth and is pretty transparent).

The Logans sound best straight off of the MX1s without any additional amping, cuz tried it hooked up to the Vali last night and was alright sounding, but when the Vali is hooked to the FiiO E17 like i posted last night, makes these Logans sounds crazy musical with much better fullness/ weight than the FiiO MHC cable, but the bass despite increased in quantity quite a bit still sounds a bit boxy/dry to me. It just didn't have that lushness/ texture i got from my ATH WS99s BUT it is getting much closer so................ haven't tried it with the ELE DAC yet so.......

i still like the Logans best stock everything via my venturecraft amp/ nano config cuz it is just so clean, tight, snappy and engaging. DAT LOGAN MAGIC!!! :)

/setup rant

I know what you mean.  I have literally gotten into my car and combed the streets looking for the UPS truck after missing a scheduled delivery.

I think you will enjoy the Mikros 90 with tubes.  :smile_phones:

SF,

Nice picks!  Thanks.

Have you tried the V-Moda cable?

My UPOCC silver and copper cables are still in development.

Again, I think the Pipeline will give you DAT LOGAN MAGIC in oodles.  But you might have to whittle the input plug barrel to get the ET-4 to fully connect.
