Replacing 2.1 Speakers, Upgrading from Creative T3s

Hey guys, I'm thinking of upgrading my 2.1 speakers. I've been using Creative T3s and I really like them but for some reason for the past year, the music would randomly get loud then soft especially if whatever is playing, video or audio is bass heavy.

Not sure what's the cause, probably some hardware issue (there was a point where I drove the sub really hard and left the volumes really high but these are powerful speakers i've no idea why they would spoil). If anyone can shed light on this would be great!

But anyway so I'm looking to upgrade from these T3 speakers. I play some games like Battlefield 3, Shogun 2 quite the variety, and listen to music which includes rock, more rock, and some techno/electronic music.

I like my bass but neighbours are always a porblem ): Hence I switched to headphones.

I like my headphones for the ability to turn up the volume real loud, but this THX surround Pro from my Creative X-fi Surround HD USB is really not working out for me and sound seems better through 2.1 speakers without this BS turned on, than on my headphones (which sound so weird with THX off probably because the sound is too close to the ear?

I'm getting DT770s tomorrow and am gonna try them out, the HD558s did not work for me...so hopefully they may work out...

But for now I'm looking for great 2.1 speakers under £200. Will probably get them from amazon.co.uk

Thanks and greatly appreciate all suggestions and the time you give to help me. Cheers!

P.S. Any comments on Harman Kardon Soundsticks III? I'm newbie at this so please be kind! :P

One option is to go for 2.0 instead of 2.1, the improved sound quality of the 2.0 should out way any loss of loud bass for the lack of a sub.

Plus less chance of "problem" with neighbours.

Are you using a laptop or desktop?

Yes, it would be hard recommending something since you primarily game more than anything. I think I'll recommend you the Avid (M-Audio) Studiophile AV40. I've seen a few love them for games and movies, and music as well.

If you have a receiver of some sort, I'd recommend hooking up passive speakers to it. According to a pretty well-known speaker guy, these are really good for the money and sound even better with some minor mods: http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-B2030P-Ultra-Linear-Reference-Monitor/dp/B000N94S7O

I worry about my neighbors as well, so I don't have a subwoofer hooked up.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'm using both desktop and laptop. Desktop for games everything else work, movies, music on the laptop.

I think I'll still be looking to get 2.1 as I can hide the subsomewhere under my table. ICONIC don't have space to put those speakers on my desk...and to be honest part of me likes the sub :P

Unfortunately I do not have the receiver as I'm not at home now but studying overseas....I really miss my home theatre system back home ): I built it 4 years ago and its still going strong!

Anyone has comments on the hat on Akron speakers I mentioned? They seem to have a decent price on amazon UK...cheaper than the creative T3s evern.

Thanks again guys

The Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks III would work fine for you as well.

Okay thanks guy. will put some thought into this once my DT770s arrive (hopefully tomorrow) and I'll see how I like them.

Only just realised they are the same price range as these speakers! OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE. Too bad about these lousy walls in the apartment making me have to consider headphones

The Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks III were better to my ears. Much more clear and distinct. The bass isn't as "muddy" as it is on the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. Another suggestion would be a T-Amplifier, speakers, and a subwoofer.

- Dayton Audio B652 Speakers

- Dayton Audio DTA-1 T-Amplifier

- Dayton Audio SUB-1000 10" Sub-woofer

You wouldn't have to get the sub-woofer immediately. The speakers drop down to 70 Hz already. They are highly regarded speakers for their price, so don't think of them to cheap.
