The HeadAmp GS-X Thread - Page 46

The only thing I would like on this unit would be the "Push" to lock things on the output jacks.

I wonder if I can add them myself?  Not a big deal - just a small thing that you get use to on other amps.

You mean the 'amp goes flying if the cables get caught locks'?  Bad bad idea if you have kids or pets.

In other news... mine has shipped yay =)  Be a nice little three way battle of the Soloist, B22 and GS-X once everything lands.  Good times!

Just initial observations...

I'm using the amp on medium gain, single-ended, with my Grado PS1000 headphones. This is the most transparent, neutral amp I've ever heard. It doesn't accentuate any part of the frequency spectrum. The noise floor is also nonexistent. The low output impedance and high current are giving me really tight bass, the best I've ever heard on the PS1000.

I'll try to post some more later. I also can't wait to use a better source with my amp. I spent all my pennies on the GS-X, and now I'm saving for a better source, hopefully the new Oppo 105. My current source is fine but nowhere near great.

Nah they suck. What happens when they jam? I don't really want to pull things apart wink.gif.

The locking jack is cool in the beginning but I grow tired of it after awhile.  Also you have a pretty good chance of unintentionally yank headphones off your head if you walk away from the amp and not careful.

Left a note for my FedEx guy with my number and he was super cool about leaving the package for me around the back.

My audio rack isn't doing me any favors right now, it's over-crowded with no space so I may have to use the GS-X for office duty.  My short XLR cables can't even reach the PWD!

I can mirror some of the sentiments about non-locking XLR's.  I use Neutrik XX XLR conectors for IC's and the "click" isn't quite as satisfying as with the lock type connectors.  Not like I spend all day doing that anyways however.

My house has a weird issue with the electricity.  I've been getting a constant hum noise through my amps audible at 0 volume, it is only exaggerated with low impedence cans and less noticeable with high impedence ones like the hd800.  Have tried a ton of different things to no avail.  The first headphone I have hooked up, the Audio Technica ATH-AD2k definitely exhibits the issue terminated single ended through the GS-X set to low gain and xa5400es (output via phase split balanced XLR).  My RS-1's exhibit the hum to a significantly lesser degree (pretty bad on high gain however), the RS-1 is terminated 4-pin XLR.

Tomorrow I have an electrician coming out to install dedicated power lines; we'll see how that goes!

Here's some un-edited quick and dirty porn.

^ Great photos! I hope you enjoy it.

I haven't looked at another amp since I got my GS-X last year. smile.gif

Looking forward to your impressions!

Could you post impressions on how it performs with your Master 7? I have a similar set up and would really like to know how they pair, together with the HD800 / LCD3.

this is from stacking the amp directly on top of the PSU which hurts the noise floor.  It's more of an issue with the GS-X mk2 than the original GS-X because the high-gain is now 15x instead of 8.5x.  The transformers are also 66% larger so there is a larger magnetic field.  To get the benefits of the separate PSU the amp needs to be placed away from the power supply; either side by side or at least 8" of vertical separation.

edit: if you're experiencing this with ALL your amps it may be something else.

I've heard good things about dedicated power lines.  Like guys with $50,000+ invested in audio gear saying a dedicated power line is the single best thing they ever did.  I don't have a dedicated line (yet!), but I did get an inexpensive APC power supply / line conditioner, and it made an significant difference in the sound quality.  Let us know how it goes with the dedicated line.

That actually leads me to ask this question: how long is the umbilical?

Can you make custom lengths?

That umbilical looks imposing. I did not expect it to be that big. How is the flexibility?
