The HeadAmp GS-X and GS-X MK2 Thread
Apr 13, 2013 at 10:03 AM Post #1,084 of 6,325
Well the math is simple.  In your case prep, the PWD2 puts out 5.6Vrms and the GS-X mk2 caps out at ~15Vrms.  3x gain would clip the amp nevermind 15x=84Vrms. M7 is 5Vrms so same thing.  Never a reason to use H unless you are using an iPod.

A brief glimpse and intro to the Headamp GSX MKII

Got home from holidays and finally have time to settle with this amp .
Where to begin, how to get a feel for it .

Just a few words about the amp in hand.
What can I say, I am proud to own this without a note played.
From packaging to finishes all are just great.
All bits and pieces work flawlessly , all connections positive and solid
I would have liked a locking click to secure the termination but it is probably better that an accidental tug pulls the connector out and not the amp to the floor, heaven forbid.
Very, very well done Mr Wilson.

I decided to take one album, a grand one .
The performance and sound quality of this is stunning.
If there ever was an album to buy to hear mood and intimacy this is it. What I write next is based  on this album only. Caveat.

Anne Bisson singing Blue Mind On the Fidelio label.
She is from Canada and the style is perhaps jazz but universally beautiful.
I listened to the first 3 songs on the album with 4 friends I know well.
Source // Marantz SA11/2 SACD  // Balanced Argento Serenity XLR // Headamp // 4 friends

I won't go into detail but just believe me when I say the options to fine tune with this amp is mind boggling.

Oldest friend first
AKG 701 // hardwired with aftermarket cable/copper and Bucchino XLR 3 pin
The music is beautiful, feels a bit weird, I get the mood and the images are sharp, great control over the lower notes.
Needs a play with gain setting and lets just say friendship needs some affirmation .

Good old Buddy.
Victor DX 1000 hardwired with aftermarket cable/silver and Buccino BAXLR 3 pin
Low gain and easy on the gas . Wow, perfect control over the bass I mean palpable chest reverberating sensations with utter control , this friend has been tamed to perfection.
Not to fulsome on absolute detail but cosy, a small jazz club atmosphere in spades . Mood and intimacy portrayed magnificently. minimal tuning needed here.

Through thick and thin friend
Audeze LCD 2 with Aphrodite Cu quad 22 Zeus cable with Furutec gold XLR 3 pin .
Beauty of tone, good cohesion, great controlled bass, stage not that great , need to experiment.

Soulmate
Beyer T1 / stock cable terminated to Neutrik 4 pin .
High gain easy on the gas. Great bass shockingly good bass quality . Sparkles just enough . Detailed and dynamic at low level listening.
Paints a beautiful picture. Best I have heard this Phone.

There you have it , this amp plays well with my 4 Friends but as you can imagine the individual friendships will blossom .
I am excited how it will scale with my premium source.

I am painfully aware of the following : Anias Ninn : We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are. So always IMHO.

Is it just me, or is it something about how wild4sound wrote this makes you really appreciate your gear even more?

I'm getting a more open sound with the high gain.  On medium gain it sounds a little muffled in comparison.

Agree.
Confirm with Diana Krall  // Love Scenes ,  Peel me a grape .
Volume knob on 3 high gain , so detailed and airy stage yet punchy and snappy upright base nudging smooth vocals and tinkly piano , light and shade.
A nice feature here is while keeping the math in mind, you can compensate for the source output and the disk recording level to get it just the way you want it for whichever phone you are listening to , interactive cool.

Having fun, not thinking about work.

Call me crazy but I am experiencing the same with GS-1 running updated modules. Even lower impedance phones like W5000 for some reason sound more dynamic and impactful in high gain, and the difference is not subtle. Go figure.

While we are pondering the mysteries of high gain settings, here is a happy ending to a real life crime story.

Congrats to Justin for saving all that gear !!

That's great news! If I lost all that audio equipment and have to pay what I owe to those companies, I be angry too for those thieves stealing my stuff. So those 3 were responsible for stealing over 6-digit figures worth of audio equipment? 2 runners and 1 mastermind in his partment. Great work between Justin and the Torrance PD. The fool in the end thought he got 2 Stax SR-009 headphones, but 2 aluminum blocks and got arrested.

Quite the read!
Good job, Justin. And congrats to Todd for receiving all his audio gear back.

That guy had a lot of gall to steal such expensive audio equipment and then quite a bit more to attempt to continue his ways.
It goes to show that being an audiophile/head-fier means you are part of a rather tight-nit internet community.

Luckily for the perpetrators, they didn't commit the crime in Saudi Arabia. Unless that country have stopped chopping hands off for theft.

What I will never understand is why? These guys had a sophisticated system set up. Do something like that as a legitimate business and you would likely be successful. A lot of hard work to do something illegal? Seriously, what is going through their heads?
