The HeadAmp GS-X and GS-X MK2 Thread - Page 207

I've owned one GS-Xmk2 (2013) sold it. I have a second on the way.  However, I will still use and prefer a speaker amp with my HE-6.  Can't comment on the Abyss, but what I've read about the Abyss the GS-X mk2 should be more than enough for them.

Hi all, not sure if this has been asked before, if so I apologise. But how does the GS-X preform as a pre amp? I've recently bought a pair of meraks to power some Vienna acoustic Klimt the kiss speakers. Right now I'm feeding them straight from my Vega, but when I turn the merak's off and turn the vega to >70 for using with my headphones via my WA5 the source signal still feed through and is enough to produce audible sound from the speakers.
I was looking to buy the Auralic Taurus Pre to match the rest of the gear, but after reading about the performance of the GS-X with the Abyss thought if give it a go if the pre amp is on par with the Taurus. It'll be good to see how it performs against the WA5 with KR 300b's, sylvania bad boys and Full Music 274B/n/+ tubes. More tactile, faster and detailed bass than the kiss speakers without sacrificing detail, extension or enjoyment.
Thanks in advance.

^ Also would like to hear more about how it performs as a pre-amp.

It performs the same way as a preamp as it does as a headamp -- very transparent and neutral.  There's a review at part-time audiophile which focuses on its performance with headphones, but IMO, these traits are also present when used as a preamp.

Hahaha, just finished reading that review before heading back to check here. Sounds like I'll have to give the GS-X some serious thought if the headphone experience translates over to the pre. Just read a 6moons review on the Taurus saying it's extended but has laid back treble. Though I usually take 6 their reviews with a grain, or two of salt.

If there was a way to control the DACT with a remote...

... only if it was motor powered.  See it as a tiny contribution for free exercise ;).

Are my ears broken?  I feel like the only guy willing to say he finds the HD800 and GS-X a boring combination.  Bear in mind, I've hit it with great sources like the PWD2 or super colored sources like vintage balanced dacs and everytime come away saying I'd rather listen to something else.  I'm not trying to hate on the GS-X, I'm a big fan, just not of the hd800 combo.

No...  I'm pretty sure your ears are fine :basshead:.  Not everybody has to like the same things: different strokes for different folks.

FWIW I didn't like the PWDmk2 with it that much my self.  But the Master 7 GS-Xmk2 and the HD800s was pretty good.

I just keep seeing people posting how they are smitten with the GS-X and some HD800's and I keep wondering to myself if these people have had a chance to see what else is out there too!

I'm one of those that aren't keen on the HD800/GS-X mk2 combo as well. You aren't alone Ricky!
