BINGO.

I was under the impression that the tubes in the BHSE have very little effect on it's sonics, based on the design??

It isn't night and day but noticeable.  Justin especially recommended the Shuguang Treasure 6CA7s for SR009 pairing over the new issue of EL34s.  He mentioned that the warmer tonality of the Shuguang tubes work better tonally with the SR009.  I personally have not tried other tubes beside the Shuguang black treasure 6CA7s and NOS Mullard EL34s XF4 and I do like the NOS Mullard better.

Your description of xf4’s bringing better resolution and dynamics mirrors my impressions of the Psvane el34ph as well. Not night and day like rolling driver tubes in other amps, but it reminds me of the differences between standard and hi definition TV – the added resolution just makes it that much more enjoyable. For me, it takes the BHSE to another level (the treasures not so much, although better than the stock tubes Justin uses).

Has anyone done a thorough comparison between the GS-X mk 2 and Eddie Current Balancing Act?  I've got a ECBA and love it with the EML 300b Mesh Plate tubes, I  wonder if I'm going to like the GS-X mk 2 any better? . . .

I'm sure that it will be close but you should be able to fine tune the sound of the Balancing Act to you liking by tube rolling.  Note that the BA in some configuration can be twice as expensive as the GS-X MKII.  So this isn't quite a fair fight.

You may prefer the practicality of the GS-X. Just switch it on and go with no added worries about tubes.

Easy for you to say. <img data-cke-saved-src=

Everyone's preferences on this are different, but I am almost certain that the bhse will not "soften" the aspects of the 009 that you find objectionable. That said, I prefer the 009 to the 007 MKI, but continue to have both.

And I continue to wait for you to sell me your 007MKI's. :p

That said, I too prefer the SR-009s.

Yes the EML 300b mesh @ $800/pair does make the ECBA about twice the GS-X mk 2  I know it's not a fair fight.  I'm just curious what others might have experienced, like maybe a David vs.Goliath or (Terminator 1 vs. Terminator 2)  thing . .

That is what got me all in. i made other people rich on tubes with the Earmax Pro and I said never again. High end discreet SS FTW.

I gotta say, after about 20 years of having a tube amp (or two) in my home, going tube-less is quite liberating! I no longer have to worry about some rare and expensive tube going microphonic after only a few months, or constantly scouring the web for a rarer and rarer tube.

Plug and play baby is the way to go....

TBH I have also been soul searching regarding tubes vs ss. There are days when I feel like storming deep into tube country and then I look upon the easy life that SS brings and I am not so sure any more. For me it is Stratus vs GS-X Mk2. Currently the Stratus is winning, but who knows what tomorrow brings?

Talk about first world problems.....
