The HeadAmp GS-X and GS-X MK2 Thread - Page 117

hmm strongly considering it now, at least for TH-900/ LCD-3/HE-500 (and future HE-6),  even if i prefer HD 800/T1 out of the Wa2. we'll see...

gonna hear zana deux this week first before i decide. if i do go for GSX i should still be able to get into this run.  also looks like im gonna return the PS1000. still undecided, but they are more than likely going to go back.

HD800 by a landslide." Sadly it seems that the HD800 has fallen from grace in your book into a pair of headphone that is tolerable. The funny part is an earlier comment actually said that you changed back and forth many times, ha... Seems like you are either very fickle-minded, or your comments are vastly exaggerated. (Sorry, can't help but noticed it while I was reading through the HD800 thread lately)

Yup.  When I brought the HD800 back again for the GS-X mk2 I had also dropped down to the LCD-2 Rev2 again.  I did not like the HD800 the other two times I owned it.  On those other rigs, the Audeze and frankly even the Senn 600/650 were simply more to my liking.  But on the GS-X/PWD2 the HD800 was quite good.  Until I brought back another LCD-3, keeping in mind that Audeze has been making them brighter and brighter over time, and what should surprise no one is the same setup that took the HD800 from something I'd pass on to something tolerable, that's a compliment, also pulled the LCD-3 performance up knocking the HD800 back down the mountain.  And yes EXTREMELY finicky about my audio.  If we aren't, why are we here?  We'd just be like everyone else, snag that, that and that... good for life.

For me personally, I find it a bit hard to swallow when someone tells everyone how heavenly a particular dish tastes, only to dismiss it as being edible a few months later, and still claims that it is a compliment?! I don't know man, I will say it would no longer surprise me if the likes of GS-X and LCD-3 also become just "tolerable" to you a few months down the road. I understand in forums, we should take everything we read with a pinch of salt, but I guess sometimes, a pinch may not be enough smily_headphones1.gif

Feel free to put me on ignore if you can't accept that one day you can really like McDonalds and then when you find The Keg that BigMac just isn't as good ;)  To be fair I generally crap on everything so tolerable from me is a compliment.  I most definitely do not suffer from new shiny toy syndrome.

- the loop out, is it passive, or the amp has to be on to get loop out signal

- if i use rca input, do i get signal out of the balanced xlr outputs (do i get any from headphone xlr out, preamp xlr out, and loop xlr out)

- the other way, if i use xlr balanced input, do i get signal out of single ended outputs (1/4" headphone and rca outs)

I have a GS-X mk2.  My experience is

When powered down:

Balance in, balance loop out works - it is passive.

I haven't verified it, but I assume the the single ended loop is passive out the single ended input

I haven't verified it, but I assume signal doesn't cross between balance / single.

When the unit is turned on, there is a temp break in signal, and then whatever input is selected by the switch flows out of all  outputs (including loop).  So when my unit is turned on, RCA input goes out the balanced loop.

Pretty sure Justin confirmed it is a passive loop out earlier in this thread. It's been covered a few times.

I've seen conflicting info on this from users (Asr says loop out needs amp on to work here http://www.head-fi.org/t/632948/the-headamp-gs-x-thread/1710#post_9767259). can you point me towards justin's official answer? thanks.

It should be passive, but mine didn't actually work that way when I tried it. It'd be the same for the rest of the 1st batch, I'd assume. When I asked Justin about it at a meet, he said that he'd made a mistake with the 1st batch.

Edit: I'm referring to the RCA loop output btw. It's possible that the XLR loop output correctly operates passively on 1st-batch units.

justin's official response regarding loop out being passive or not, and whether SE in gives balanced out + vice versa:

Quote:

they are passive

with SE RCA input, you will get output from the XLR outputs, however it will not really be balanced. the GS-X mk2 doesnt do single ended to balanced conversion (other amps use a cheap chip for this, however this means the SE input signal ALWAYS goes through the cheap chip)

yes, XLR balanced in will get you output from the RCA pre-out and 1/4" headphone out

i wonder how the dact pot does with sensitive iems like se530. anybody tried? i hope it has enough steps before getting too loud. would be a bummer if on lowest gain a single step is too loud

placing my order for the GSX MK2 tomorrow morning!!!!

i should be able to get into this run still, anyone know when they would ship?

btw is GSX just balanced, or does it have singled ended output for headphones?

and does it need balanced inputs?
