In anyway you look at it, both models are first class IMO.

A big dose of research, listening and experience. :^)

The difference can only be slight.
If anyone asked me I would have suggested a special edition upgraded high performance amp to commemorate the anniversary.
An upgraded b52, etc.
Something unique, different, special.

I totally agree with you maybe the golden case would already be attractive, along the lines of the iPhone 5s biggrin.gif

Just got an intruder for crazy cheap used price. Looking forward to compare it with my bottle head crack and cords quickstep. It should best the quickstep for sure but I wonder how it holds its ground compared to crack. Looking forward to running my hd800 finally in balanced also

You won't be disappointed!  Please report back on how you like it with the HD-800, I had a brief listen with that combo at Ray's and was quite astonished (but not surprised) at how great the Intruder ran them.

Yeah thank the prior owner, it's not every day that the intruder goes for such a low price, this is one of my possession that I'll have to entirely leave the pleasure of audiophilia to let it go, even more so at that insane price. Enjoy your new fantastic possession, just be ready to have your wallet go flatter as you'll extract every ounce of sq out of it. beerchug.gif

+1 - it's not often that I have something that is worth any decent amount that I don't even think about selling, and the Intruder IS that one possession of mine.  Pretty great achievement what Ray has accomplished in these.

First, I appreciate all the helpful info as I've been reading several threads as I look to purchase a portable headphone amp and DAC.

I'd like to hear what people think of using the traditional Intruder as a standalone unit, versus using the anniversary edition (amp only) in conjunction with another DAC, such as the Solo -dB. I realize that there is the cost differential and footprint. How about the SQ? A friend of mine loves his Intruder/Solo -dB combo, but he's not local so I can't listen for myself.

Also, I'm not clear on what the DAC improvement is on the newer Intruders. Am I missing something or is there an explanation on this?

Thanks

From my experience, I'm probably in the minority, but the DAC on the intruder for me, I don't like it at all. Paired with my Sony zx1, it sounds horrific. Using the LO, the Intruder rocks. For my Note 3, DAC sounded about the same, just louder.

I suppose the source plays a major role in this. I couldn't fathom stacking a DAC, plus the Intruder, and a DAP. I barely enjoy an additional amp with my DAP... Let alone another device.

I think it's a save assumption a new top end DAP like the sony DAC quality will be better than a 2 year old 16bit DAC. I'm surprised however the built in DAC doesn't beat note 3 audio processor.

It may be better than the Note 3, I haven't spent enough time with it. I just know it sounds better than with the zx1.

Thanks for your input. After some more research I'm intrigued by the Centrance HiFi-M8. Strong reviews and decent price for a combo unit that's balanced. Welcome any other thoughts. Thanks

Hifi-m8 does looks good on paper and well reviewed the only catch is it is pretty huge for portable setup. Not something I would want to carry arround

I'm willing to lug it around given all of it's other upsides. There is no perfect portable headphone DAC/amp as far as I can see:smile:
