THE INTRUDER by RSA. balanced dac/amp. . Update available for even better sound. Just pay shipping. - Page 32

I just got to know about  the iFi Audio iDSD a few days ago.

Reading on, it's a DAC with a Battery.  And does PCM, DSD, and DXD.   Portable High Resolution System using my iDevices (iPhone5, iPad Mini)

I phones our local audio shop to check on the details and if they had one I can demo.  They said yes and this evening I went.

Connection:

iPhone5 with Onkyo HF Player  > Camera Connection Kit > iDSD > Audio RCA  to RSA Balanced cable> Intruder (balanced-in) > CUSTOM 20awg Pure Silver 7NUPOCC cable (balanced-out) > Audeze LCD-XC.  Format: DSD.  Sample Rate 5.64MHz.

Did the very brief Audition.  Caught myself Smiling to myself like a fool.  Paid 2 bills and took the iDSD home.

At home, unplugged the iPhone.  Connected the Rig to my Desktop with the Media Center 19.  Format: DSD  Sample Rate 352.8KHz/64bit

Well for this coming week my Conductor finally takes a Break from Desktop Duties.  The Intruder will have to do 2 shifts:  Portable Rig - Daytime & Desktop Rig  - Evenings.

Got 2 Intruders.  My first Intruder #20, sent to RSA for a DAC upgrade.  Thanks Ray!

Quick question. Does anyone know what the intruder's output impedance is? Also, I get a hiss when I adjust my volume. Is that normal?

Ive heard ray say that if you hear hiss when you adjust volume, you just need to turn the volume knob like 50 times and it should go away

Turn it back and forth all the way from mute to highest over and over 50 times?

Yes, but I normally don't turn it that many times but what it does is clean the contact area. This can happen with any wiper type volume control and even stepped attenuators.

Can anyone who has had the DAC enhancement tell us what your perception of the change has been? Has anyone been able to eek out what the difference is in terms of the physical DAC setion?

My new Intruder arrived a couple of days ago after the first one had charging issues.

Out of the box, I must say that I wasn't super impressed with this amp running my HE-400's in balanced mode, but after around 20 hours of burn in it's really starting to open up. Very impressive little amp, and I've no buyers remorse at all. Can't wait to see how the sound evolves over time

I'm looking at getting some CIEM's shortly. Would anyone like to comment on how the K10's, JH13fp/Roxanes or Miracle/Mentors would pair up with the Intruder?

I always worry about this stuff. Subjective testing on burning in hasn't been too promising. I almost wanna call it "burn-ON" since it's really more like you getting used to the sound. Additionally, are you absolutely sure of that pairing? The intruder has a sig slightly north of neutral in the bass region. From what I hear, the HE-400 is MAD dark. Maybe your initial impression was a bit too much bloom down low?

Edit: After looking at the measurements for the HE-400, It actually looks to be more of a midrange bloom than anything else. Perhaps that forward presentation isn't jiving with the extra warmth of the intruder?

No the sound has definitely changed. I listened for about an hour straight out of the box with my HE-400's (balanced) and my RE-400's (S/E), and like others mentioned, the intruder was quite veiled, especially in the mids. I then put it aside and let it play (some reference classical recordings) on loop for around 20 hours before coming back to it for another listen, and it's definitely opened up a lot.

I know a lot of people disagree with the whole 'burning in' concept claiming that it's just your ears adjusting to the sound sig, but I've definitely found that on most of my brand new gear the sound has changed over time. You could always run an A/B on the same product, one unboxed and one well used, and see for yourself if there's a noticeable difference in SQ between the new and burned in item if you want to confirm or bust this myth.

Anyways, I'm super happy with how the sound is evolving (to my ears anyways) and it should only get betterer :-)

I have the Intruder pair with JH13pro (non fp) + TWag v2 Hybrid balanced. They are paired up really well, the Intruder improve all frequency region especially low and mid with really back background.
