[REVIEW] Sony MH1 – The Best Kept Secret - Page 199

Hi all,

So, I'm confused as to whether the MH1C and the MH1-BL are the same.  Or at least whether they sound the same, which is what I really want to know.  Can anyone confirm?  I tried searching back in this thread on the issue, and I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Different style.... "BL" just means black as far as I know (?)...It is just really an MH-1.

There is an off-site comparison in the thread.

Ahh yes, I see in the post toward the bottom by ClieOs that they do sound the same.  Sorry, I missed that.  In his original review, he didn't indicate whether they sounded the same, but I see now that he did in a follow-up post.  When I was searching on a comparison between the two, I was taken to several pages in the middle of this thread, and I also read ClieOs original review, but I missed that follow-up post.

Thanks for pointing it out.

If you're lucky the will most likely sound the same. However, there has been some speculation, primarily from Rin's blog post on the subject, that the MH1C has much worse quality control in achieving the same response between models. Therefore, a lot of MH1C earphones had a noticeable amount of extra bass compared to the MH1, which is very consistent between units. Otherwise, they are the same earphone essentially. So you just 'might' end up with a bassier unit.

You can pop off the little logo cap, but you will be facing wiring that was hot glued after it was soldered to the driver terminals. Not the greatest pic but you get an idea. The molded part of the cable end forms the plug seal to the driver chamber.

So i could solder and then seal it with something in place of the logo part? How do you safely remove the logo part?

On Mine the logo cap was just on with what appeared to be contact cement. A small jewellers flathead screwdriver popped it off quite easily.

The trick then is the cabke plug end use a pin or something similar to pop out the cable plug and genltly pull it through the"strain relief" jacket. It moves pretty freely once you do get a grip on it.

This is not a mod friendly earphone and 3rd hand vise is pretty much mandatory. And a really good hig mag loupe.

Edit. Now this is Odd. I just popped open the other driver and under the logo cap is a plastic cap with a hole in it. This appears to be molded into the shell. I cut that away with an xacto knife (it's about 1/5 mm thick) and the cable end plug is under that. This was not present on the other driver, which explains the awful channel imbalance these have. Hmmm.

Does anyone know where to get replacement filters for the MH1? It's the little white screen at the end of the barrel.
