I do agree, burn-in definitely brings the best out of this gem.

I let my curiosity get the best of me. There is actually 2 pieces: mesh and foam. The mesh can be removed and replaced easily with an exacto knife. Inside the canal there is also a small foam piece. I removed the mesh and the foam and replaced the mesh. In this configuration you lose a ton of bass and they just do not sound the same. Then I tried replacing the foam and removing the mesh. In this configuration I feel it really opens everything up more and the bass is still really powerful. It does border on being a bit hot but I prefer this to the muted highs I experienced before the mod. I am leaving mine this way for now.

In that case, the foam is for acoustic tuning and the mesh is for moisture barrier. You can do without the foam but not without the mesh, as water condensation inside the housing can do bad thing to the driver, or you can take that risk of course. There is actually a different variation of the filter, which is an all-in-one black mesh, but you probably won't find it around as it is used on another model.

Damn, these fall out quite often when on move due to heavy bulk on the mic part, so using sony hybrids is breaking the seal dampening the isolation and bass response. I tried using my S6's triple flange large and is way better and stays good in the ear...

A slight update: I just got my Nano 7G and can confirm the mic won't work on it. Given I have tested the mic on my Nano 4G and it works, the current conclusion is - MH1 will likely work only on older iDevices but not the latest generation. Apple must have changed something along the way...

Yeah, due to the bulky mic, try some triple flanges, fit is good and doesnt fall out.

woah.

purchased mine at 19.90 from amazon 2 days ago.

I go to check today and the price has increased to 20.90.

 

Not significant.

But quite telling of the demand and influence head-fiers have when there's a deal to be had.
