On a funk tip try The Meters there's also a couple of compilations called New Orleans Funk http://www.amazon.com/New-Orleans-Funk-Various-Artists/dp/B00004Y246/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351269497&sr=8-1&keywords=new+orleans+funk which are a great introduction to funk.

 

Although not with vocals Miles Davis from Filles de Kilimanjaro through Bitches Brew to On the Corner are brilliant albums of the Jazz Funk variety. In A Silent Way being a very special favourite of mine

Galactic is another great funk-jazz band. They sound similar to the Meters.
