Looking for Custom IEM information. (UM Merlin/Miracle)

You may have seen my thread asking about the IEMs with the most bass.  To summarize that briefly I wasn't happy with my TF10's bass.  If I hook it into an amped audio source it's fine, but it's very lacking on my iPhone. (i know it's an iPhone which is garbage)... however I purchased 5eb, but not happy with the overall quality of the sound.  Bass bleeds, too much mid bass, no mids, highs too sharp.

 

About to pull the trigger on some IE80s, i run across a thread linking me to Unique Melody.  The UM Merlins look promising, as do the Miracles.

 

Called an audiologist nearby they said it's $60 for impressions.  Not too bad.

 

I've never owned, or seen Custom IEMs in real life, very few pictures of Custom IEMs have tips on them.

 

My first question is: Do Custom IEMs use tips?  I would think noise isolation, and seal won't quite be as good with out some sort of tip (i'm a big fan of comply foam tips).

 

My second question: Do you think the Miracles have more sub bass than the TF10? (actual owners please)

Customs are molded specifically to your ears. They are generally made out of a silicone or acryllic substance, are hard, and insert deep into your ears. You would not use tips for customs designed for your ears.

Yea, I assumed that, but I saw a few with tips on em.  Odd.

 

I still don't see how the "hard" silicone or acrylic can seal like a foam/silicone tip could... and no seal = no bass.  But I guess custom molded are perfect fit, so perfect seal.

I think the ones with tips are for demonstration at head gear shows or ones that are in development.

Customs are molded to your ears so its provide perfect fit therefore comply foam/tips are not needed unless the fit is loose.

ill re-quote myself, also saw 1964 ears demoing customs with tips and taking orders at a show.

Hey there, 

 

I was actually asking myself this the other day but finally realised it ...

 

The ones with tips are universal made in ear monitors as they are demo units etc, it's made universal with the silicon tips. However if you order custom made iems it will be just the plastic. In saying that, I'm pretty sure you can ask them to make you a universal fit Miracle/Merlin - I was actually considering this too but reading around, people say the acrylic is rather comfortable given that your impressions are perfect.
