in addition to everyone's input here!

Thanks alot!

Keep the comments coming if there are any.

Thanks guys (: I'm so touched!

yes I think the dt770s will do you best for now. 990s I have not heard but the 770s are impressive. I think the 990s have a different sound sig. though

Hey Smaker or anyone else out there, can you tell me the difference in sound signature between the 770s and 990s both pro versions?

I'm having last minute second thoughts after reading that the 990s have better clarity in the upper frequencies? unsure if with equal bass or not...

The beyerdynamic DT 990 is a brighter headphone when compared to the DT 770. Its bass is not like the DT 770, but its very good and energetic. The highs are always raised a tad bit. For me, it is not sibilant; for others, it is. The mid-range may sound recessed, but its just because of the U-shaped frequency response. I believe if you pair it with a nice tube amp, you'll love it. You don't always need something high-end. I use my pair with the HiFiMAN EF2A. I switched out the tubes with Mullard CV4010 tubes and use my old, warm sounding FiiO E10 as a dedicated DAC and the sound is glorious. I use the beyerdynamic DT 990 600Ω headphone, and it runs amazingly well. I wouldn't think the 30Ω or 250Ω would be a world difference. Just easier to power is all. Hope this helps!

I had suggested the new Philips X1, open but bassy for such with somewhat similar FR balance (not too bright). Seems to be both a fun but quite detailed sounding headphone at the same time with a nice soundstage too.

How about the Denon d2000? Only recently becaome discontinued because of the new range, but they have lots of deep bass and a great soundstage for closed cans. Very comfortable too.

Very best,

I'm an Ultrasone HFI-2400 owner and i listened carrefully HD558/598 a few days ago ... I really think HFI-2400 would be a very very good option.  HD 598 anf HFI-2400 are clearly in the same league , both bring a lot of pleasure ( IMO these two cans are more designed for fun listening than analytical one ) but Ultrasone gives more bass and globaly more impact/strength/depth ... hd598 sounded "lighter" to my ears .

Although I liked the senn I'll offer my father , HFI-2400 match better with my taste and brings me more "wow" effect each day.

I hope I used good words to transcribe my feeling ;)

Thanks porter, I saw that article which gave me my pause haha

Well i think i'll stick with the DT770 pros for now. Since the 990s are not sold by amazon uk and don't have their return policy....

Was looking around for the Denon D2000, can't seem to find it on amazon uk or de so no luck there...

I got a Creative X-fi HD USB which is supposedly rated to 300Ohms, but I guess i'll stick with the 80ohm DT770 for now....another plus since I don't have a dedicated amplifier, (even though the X-fi HD claims to be able to do it) just to be safe. I might get better sound from the ohm alone due to my lack of a dedicated amp...

Thanks guys, I'll let you all know how it goes when I get the DT770s next week.

P.S. I didn't want to go for the Ultrasone's cause comfort is VERY important to me as well and it seems in that area the Beyer's are hard to beat!
