My suggestion is maybe get the original modded t50rp fostex called mad dogs. The originals are 260 and you can get a fiio e11 which is a very good little 50 dollar amp that you could hook up to ipod/iphone via LOD. This would offer a very good balanced or neutral response. 

 

For a little more of a suggestion try out this thread for a set of headphones:

after that if you think you need a amp I would suggest the e11

 

If you want dac and amp in one then the e7/e17

 

 

mix and match to meet the 300 price range and you should be good.

agree, with the srh940s beeing great phones, but they are not portable at all.
