Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones - Page 155

After a week of use, I can only say I am ecstatic. I never listen Dean Can Dance so alive; such beauty, such sorrow, such wonder in their music all thanks to my TH600 :k701smile:

I've heard that even Dead Can Dance sounds pretty good with them :beerchug:

Well, after some more communication with Mark Lawton, with his suggestions, I decided on quilted maple for my new ear cups:

It'll be interesting when Mark's new site goes live.  He'll have 5 groups of woods, based on list/questions of listening habits and sound expectations.  Mark is absolutely on board with wood species, and its effect on sound....

The Court of the Crimson King sounds amazing with these!

These are extremely comfortable as well.

I was able to listen to the TH600 and the TH900 side by side and I have to say the TH600 isn't that much worse than the 900 to warrant getting both or upgrading from the 600 to the 900. So the next headphone I will prolly get is the TH600.

Probably a good choice.  Owned the 900, auditioned the 600 for 10 days or so and really, there is no difference to my 52 year old ears.  For that matter, the Denon D7000 is every bit as good as either of them to me.

Hello, headfiers!

Can anyone explain me, Sennheiser HDVD 800 is good reason for Fostex TH600, or not?

I'm afraid that low impedance of headphones and high output impedance of hdvd 800 will not work really well together.

Biggest difference I find between the two is the TH600 can be harsh on the highs occasionally, whereas the TH900 isn't and is generally more smoother/forgiving than it's younger bro.

To get that more smoother sound the TH900 is roughly double the cost of the TH600, but IMO it doesn't deliver anywhere double the SQ. I think that's why Fostex use beautiful wood lacquered earcups on the 900 to try and justify the price, which seems to have worked as the Bordeaux coloured cups are so iconic with the 900 that maybe the 600 gets overshadowed and overlooked?

Both very good headphones, just the TH900 represents diminishing returns to get that bit extra SQ and the TH600 represents the better bang for your buck, IMO smily_headphones1.gif

Both the 600 & 900 stock signatures are a little bright but both have enormous head room to respond superbly to EQ - especially the bass which is unbelievable - if you're a basshead and want a true blue audiophile basshead headphone then look no further than either or the two FOSTEX cans.

If you want to get a visual on just how hard the bass can be EQ'd on these cans, check the below links to the extreme bass thread where both the 600 & 900 underwent a SPL test of a unique kind - half a sheet of A4 paper is placed over one earpad with the other keeping it in place - a heavy sub bass track is played and the bass hit, is transferred to the paper which vibrates to varying degree of each headphone - you may well be amazed by watching the 600 & 900 push some serious air onto the paper wink.gif

When watching these videos just remember that the paper is what your ears and side of head would be
taking ! eek.gif

ps is it just FOSTEX who do things in reverse?

First the TH900 flagship - then the TH600 and now the TH500?

Usually it's the other way around - then again OPPO seem to have taken a leaf out of FOSTEX's book with their first released PM1 and now the cheaper PM2 - lol biggrin.gif

I've since heard both back to back and I don't think that is the case, the difference was small enough for me to keep the d600 and sell the fostex.

maybe, but for me there is a big difference (bass quality, d600 is never so precised like th600) with my ak240 player... this was only my impression...

Keen to hear what those differences were as I have been considering upgrading from the D600's myself and it's been playing on my mind. The D600's have been heavily discounted which is why I went for them instead of the TH600's which sell for over 1K here in Australia. Will the TH600's be that much of an upgrade to justify the price. 4 times the price.

I like the sound signature of the D600's for certain genres but keep reading these forums and feel the need to upgrade however in this case perhaps not. I feel I should instead complete my headphone collection with a set of open cans (HD650's) and leave it at that.

My situation is kind of similar. I have HD650s and want closed-back headphones with amazing, hard hitting, accurate bass but also with an audiophile reference sound quality. I don't like those boomy, low-quality bass that average Joe likes. In basshead club's page, TH-600 is said to be the 3rd best basshead headphones. TH-900 is 2nd. I also considered buying the D600 due to its affordable price but didn't because I thought maybe I should spend more and buy TH-600s instead. Then the law of diminishing returns come to mind, am I wasting money blah blah... Hard to decide.

The Denon's can be had for not a lot of cash.

It would be nice to get a detailed comparison between the two. Are the TH600's 4-5 times better. Are the Denon's that bad especially at the price they are now.

Jonone, your experience with the two would be most welcome and appreciated.
