Have anyone asked Mr. Ken of CypherLabs the main reason they choose AKM over Wolfson for the DAC chip in the new products?
I still believe the Wolfson DAC chip (with proper design of the DAC system) can produce the best sound eventhough this is just solely my opinion.
For those who have ipod classic 5th Generation will know what I mean. ![]()

Yawn. Broken record syndrome.

(btw I have the 5g and ....other ipods/iphones, imho it is not the wolfson that people enjoy so much in the 5G, it is the rolled off highs the 5g has...esp. young sensitive ears).
I have both 5th gen. ipod video (60GB) and the latest ipod classic (160GB). In term of sound quality (sound stage, separation, detail, volume), ipod video wins in every aspect!![]()
Note: ipod video - with Wolfson chip
ipod classic - with Cirrus Logic chip

so you keep saying in nearly every post. yawn. double yawn. triple yawn.
Sorry...but it seems like lots of new members who join head-fi like to post `Oh mai gawd, 5G ipod iz teh bestest ipod eva!`. It gets old really fast, especially when members feel the need to keep individually posting it over and over again.
Annnd....Testing ONLY two ipods side by side is far from a scientific process. It is laughable.
Here is a list for you, test 5 cirrus and 5 wolfson, get a friend to swap from ipod to ipod whilst you close your eyes.
They can take a note of the results, then get back to us. Use lossless files if possible.
Use several types of headphones and IEMs.
Do it properly or not at all.
Which iPods have a wolfson audio chip?
iPod 1G & 2G (WM8721), 3G (WM8731), 4G(WM8975), 5G (WM8758BG) and 5.5G (WM8758BG)
iPod nano 1G (WM8975G), 2G (WM8975), 3G (WM1870)
iPod Touch 1G (WM8758BG)
iPod mini (Wolfson 8731?)
iPhone (WM8758BG) and the iPhone 3G (WM6180).
Which iPods have a Cirrus Audio Chip?
ipod ‘Classic’ 1G , 2G & 3G (CS42L55) (These are also known as 6th 7th and 8th gen iPod)
ipod nano 4G (CS42L58), 5G (CLI1480A), 6G (CLI1544C0)
iPod Touch 2G (possibly CS42L58)
iPhone 3GS (CS41L61) and 4(338S0589), 4S (338S0987)
iPod Shuffle 4th Gen (CLI1544C0)

One thing that people keep overlooking is the fact that it's not the DAC chip alone that makes the difference, but how that DAC chip is used in the entire system. You can have a really crappy DAC with an ESS Sabre DAC chip. I don't think we can apriori say that the new CLAS will be inferior to the previous one just because it has an AKM (which is a great DAC chip by the way) and not Wolfson.
