The Denons are pretty much semi-closed. They leak a bit, and don't really isolate all that well. Because of this, the sound is very open as well, much more open that the sr325is, or any lower-end Grado stock really.

Not my experience at all.  Had D7000 and 325is.  Grado was much more open.

I don't know the 701, but I've tried the 601, which are supposed to have more bass impact than 701, and for rock (not saying about hard rock or metal) they were really bad, no bass, no impact, huge soundstage but not sounding natural

Agreed for the Denon, they don't really sound like closed cans, and don't isolate much. I don't know about the new Denon Line, but I owned the D2000 (sold them for 5000), and they were really good, excellent details, bass impact, smooth highs, really great all rounder for their price (and some of the most comfortable, despite the pleather pads which I usually don't like)

Makes sense, I heard the Grados with the L-cush. My modded sr80i with bowl pads easily had a larger soundstage than either of them.
