I am 100% open to suggestions.  I mostly game and listen for music for hours on end.  Thanks in advance.

they don't benefit much from an amp though, they do improve, but not by much, i suggest get the HD598

I'd put priority on the headphone, especially if you consider that the hd5xx are not particularly revealing.

Does it make a difference that I am using a laptop's sound card, I don't have a desktop yet.

 

and I am not willing to spend 500 dollars on headphones... yet...

Yes it does,  laptop are known for being worst source .

I suggest something like a fiio e10.

If you're just using your laptop, i recommend getting a cheap DAC/amp combo, like this fiio: http://head-direct.com/Products/?act=detail&id=85

Either of the two headphones will be fine.

I have no relationship with said seller, but an established Head-Fier currently has a sale on a Like-New pair of HD 598s for 558-like prices.
