I have a MK III with HD 600s, K701s, and just recently HE-400,s. I am curious do you leave your gain settings at 5, or do you change the setting to 3, or 4 for the 400's?

For the 701s & HE400s the gain should be set to low (3 or 4).

I always Keep my 701s, @ 5. Sounded the best. 4 made it sound way to airy! But I would think the 400s would prob be best at 4?

I have my gain setting on 5 because I use same amp for the 400s and hd650s.  I found that was the best setting for me for the 650s, seems to have a small attenuation in bass but increased soundstage imo.

Yes I leave mine on 5 as well. I am just wondering if 5 is to hot for th HE 400's?

If you're able to do a little DIY, you could build an O2 / ODAC combo at that price or buy it prebuilt for a little more. I haven't heard the HE400 or HD650 with this set-up, but it works great with my HE500 & HD600, and my LCD-2 for that matter.

What about the Audioengine D1? People say they love that? I'm trying to find out which is better: The Audioengine D1, or the FiiO E17/E9K (Paired).
