I only googled the term because I couldn't remember the name of the band that mentioned it in a song....now I wish I hadn't.

You too huh?
I spent many a day as depicted in this GIF I generated.
While the nuns tried, as we older farm boys grew it was meted out by a stocky male principle, along with a male "guidance counsellor" who guarded the door or assisted in the strapping.
The objective was to get the tough individual to cry and break his defiant spirit.
You might get it on the back of the hands if the palm didn't produce the pain effect, or even worse was a special strap with perforations on it that would break skin.
I'd seen the toughest fighters in the school come out whimpering in agony after some of those sessions.
Every time it just pissed me off even more.
The paddle strap was also used in the Ontario Correctional Center up to 1968.
The hand strap remained in some Ontario schools until the 1990's and wasn't formally repealed by the Supreme Court until 2004.

I've never actually tried Vegemite. I go to a local Australian pie shop every now and then and they sell it there. One of my dad's work friends apparently uses it and he said to apply a very thin layer of it on bread.
I've heard similar. I've also heard that it's common to add packaged sliced cheese to this. I actually tried this once with Marmite and it wasn't bad, but it became work to finish the last few bites.
