This bucket I'm using doesn't even have a real sound card - that would be a waste for meh,...totally!!!

Oh, anyone have an old dual core laptop they'd be willing to get rid of? Let me know,...I'm in need of an upgrade for my Linux uses. And my Windows laptop is D.O.A. right now. All I have is what I'm using right now.

Interesting that they went right for the source (Debian), rather than being yet another Ubuntu derivative. Then again, I imagine that with their minimalist ethos this would be preferable--you'd just be gutting all the extra stuff from Ubuntu, anyway.

We have linux running on a few of our servers (we use 64 bit Oracle "Unbreakable" rolleyes.gif linux) - so, other than occasionally opening a putty window, I really don't use it any more. We have it on an Oracle Virtual Machine cluster running on a pair of 2 x quad-core Cisco blade servers w/ 64 GB of RAM and an EMC SAN with 53 TB (raw) of storage. Nice, low-cost HW... wink.gif

The longer I wait to jump back in, it seems there's always a new flavour to trip over.  :D

I was pleasantly surprised by PCWorld's/TechHive's (same bloody thing) latest headphone buying guide. These people actually seem to know what they're talking about, rather than just parroting "Beatz n Bose n Skullcandy iz teh r0xx0rz!!!1111!!!" or, worse, making a clumsy and error-riddled attempt to explain audio terminology. They even mentioned HeadRoom and had a picture of the Momentum on the first page.

I wonder if the author and/or any of the other contributors are Head-Fi'ers.

The writer was Dan Frakes - he's been here - at least as a lurker. Go to 40:30 in this interview and he talks about head-fi:

I haven't posted here in a while. Are we doing Doofus December, or did something else pop up?

As far as I understand, we're doing doofus. Which means I need to come up with an avatar very soon. These 30 day months keep catching me off guard.

EDIT: Searching for "doofus" turns up quite a few pictures of Obama and Bush (not together, of course). That seems about right. At least the Internet cuts both ways.

EDIT 2: I might cycle through several different doofuses this month (I always say I'll do a revolving avatar lineup and never end up actually doing it), but for now it's good old Homer Simpson. A very recognizable doofus if ever there was one.

I figured he had to at least know about us and that it was likely he had spent some time around here. Just thinking about it now, in all the PCWorld magazines I ever got with my subscription (yes, I got the dead tree version until they quit publishing it this past summer), not once did they print a story like the one I linked. Granted, it's not strictly a PC, but then, neither were so many of the other things they reviewed. They sort of paid portable audio lip service, but never in depth and never with anything I would call expertise. I just thought that was odd because over the duration of my subscription (mid-2007 through mid-2013) the focus of the publication shifted increasingly away from the techie bent (such as it was in 2007--it was already pretty lightweight by then) and more toward the mainstream. This kind of article would have fit right in with that shift.

I miss the print run. I haven't yet found a suitable replacement for bathroom reading.

It is apparently "Dom" from Big Brother.

Wow, he and Tebow could be brothers.
