I really hate the 940...
I'd go with the K701 between the 2.

Why do you hate them? A lot of people compare them to the HD800's give or take a few differences >.>

I have the HD800 and would never use the SRH940 if I had the choice.
Everything just sounds so unnatural and tinny with a complete lack of bass.

I'm wearing mine right now, they have a bit of a bright high end, but the bass is very much there. They don't have a huge bass impact... But its definitely enough for me, and I'm a self proclaimed basshead. Did you EQ them at all?

I did not EQ the 940.
I felt the K701 was much better without EQ that I wouldn't bother trying with the 940.

If you give the 940's a 3-6 db boost at around 60-120 Hz, it makes a huge difference. I guess I'm also partial to closed cans, open cans always sounded too airy, like the HD650, couldn't stand those, felt like i was way in the room, and the music was playing in the opposite direction so to speak. TOO wide of a soundstage i guess i could say
