From Lyr & LCD2 to ...? - Page 2

preproman has all these hps and has or had about all these amps (less the LYR) with them. Drop a PM and get one member's response. Something we did at his place was put the LCDs on his speaker amps and were more impressed with the LCD than any of the others. And they sounded very good already on the other amps.

+1,on that.

Up to about 2 weeks ago,my Lcd2's were my favorite headphones.

I used the Lyr,& had about? 35 pairs of tubes, ranging from Ge's to Lorenzes...honestly,I believed that sq cannot get better..until,

I bought a pair of the he-6's,used,from another head-fier

Not really happy with the way the lyr drove these,I got a Mjolnir-much better,but..???

I got myself a Emotiva mini-100  speaker amp,..used it with the he-6's,and I have not picked up my lcd's since.

I also,have used the lcd's with this amp,but I feel..it might be too powerful...needs more testing??

I strongly suggest ,to go to a meet,& have a good long listen to the He-6's,with a speaker amp..you will not regret it.

IMHO ,for me,the He-6's are one of the finest headphones made,if amped properly...I have no desire to look for another combination

I will still use, my lcd's & Madogs with the Mjolnir,& soon to get Gungnir dac.

Guess, instead of tube rolling,I,'ve graduated to.... headphone/amp rolling??

So I think I'm going to sell my LCD2 and get an LCD3, then see if I still want another set of cans... Is there a set of tube for Lyr that works best with the LCD3, or should I look at another amp?  Is there a significant benefit to balanced with the 3?

If I can find a T1 or HD800 for a good price I'll grab either one and compare it, but I'm going to go out of my way to get an LCD3.

The HE-6 scares me. :)

That much power is a serious commitment.  I've never even looked at a speaker amp, so that's a whole new learning curve.

Out of curiosity why are you going out of your way for the LCD-3? As far as Lyr and LCD-3, it's not as idk "synergistic"

as the LCD-2. However it's still quite freaking good. I thought the Siemen and Halske were very good for the LCD-3.

But they are pricey, Lorenz Stuttgart are all around stellar and more affordable. Going rates are $120/pair.

Balanced brings more power, but the LCD-3 doesn't really need it. Good implementation of balanced amps

will bring overall better SQ across the spectrum. Just much more of it and better controlled.

If you do go with the HD800, keep in mind that source is very important to get everything out of the HD800.

The HE-6's aren't really scary at all. They are more of a PITA than any other headphone. You can get a dirt cheap mono that will drive

them, but it won't allow for the most refined SQ, others will probably disagree. An integrated amp could be really, really good,

offer plenty of power with more of those refinements.

The HE-6 is much more limiting, as you're pretty much building a setup around 1 headphone. So that's much more of a

complimentary can for later down the road. For that extra something...

Seems like you are where I was a month ago..not sure what tubes, not sure what headphones, not sure what amp?

I love the lcd2's,never owned the lcd3's ,because I feel the price is too high.

I sold my Lyr,& all of my tubes to get the Mjolnir amp,and I'm glad I did,..it has brought a new life to my Lcd's,a headphone I will never sell.

Jumping to the he-6's ,you have to give this real careful thought..it does require a proper amp,so...?

I've owned the T1's,,but sold them after a few months..also an excellent headphone, just not my type of sound?,a little too bright..

Never owned the hd800 either ,so,I would follow closely what Para has said,I believe he has owned them 2x's..

If I were you,I would try to use some other tubes on the Lyr..keep what you have ,and try to find the dfferences in various tubes & how they affect the sound quality.,with the lcd's.

Jumping  from headphones to amps to tubes, might be an answer, but it is a sure way of depleting your wallet...picking some other tubes, might be a good option, for your ears & wallet, for now?

Just my .02cents,

Mike

I much prefer to get a good amp that I don't have to tinker with and save the effort and time playing with tubes.  Is Mjolnir a good match with the LCD3?  I think it's considerably cheaper than others mentioned, but I'd also then need to upgrade to a balanced DAC...

Although another benefit to balanced is that I can connect my Mackie monitors to the balanced setup...

Too many options. :(

Gotcha. Mjolnir is an excellent match. It's much better than a lot of amps out there, so value is there. IMO, of course.

Having or wanting to upgrade to a new DAC balanced or not, is something to think about.

Once again, we've given you options and there's a lot to choose from. But you have to make the decision. Good luck!

I'm late to the party..wink_face.gif

However,  I think the MJ, Soloist or the BHA-1 will be great choices.  Also have you thought about the HE-500?  More easier to drive so you can use any of the amps mentioned.

The LCD-3 is a great choice to if you want to drop 2K.  The HE-500 are around 6 or 7 hundred depending on where you get them from.

Yeah, I sold my LCD2, Lyr, and Bifrost.  I have an LCD3 coming in.  I'm just deciding whether or not I should get Mjolnir & Gungnir or look for something else... with a budget of around $2k, are those the best I can do?

I dunno.  Lots more research to do, I guess.

I'd say get it. You'd have the current FOTM in all three product lines.

HC is right.  At this point in time with 2K it looks like the Schiit is the Schiit.

I heard the LCD-2.2 + Mjolnir combo is to die for.
