Lol. Looked at their amps, ooh an entry level amp sounds cool. Let's see, pricing pricing... Sounded cool. Maybe I'll wait a while before investing in an something like an ec =p the w3000 killed me enough for a long while

I'm breaking in my new W3000ANV and its making really nice music with the m903; I think the HD800 will be on the sidelines until the Stratus gets in, it just seems a little on the harsh side now.

Yeah the numbers are all over.  I got mine months ago, April or May and the serial number is in the 1900's.

Is it just me or do the y wings feel kind of fragile? I have a ginormous head so they fit on my head comfortable without the need for clips but IM scared one of the clips is gonna snag on something and come off. Other than that their build is pretty solid

I am wanting to buy a really awesome set of closed headphones. Can anyone give a comparison of the Edition 8 to the W3000ANV?

They are both excellent, but pretty different.  Ed 8 have more bass weight, more neutral but drier midrange.  The W3000ANV have slightly tighter bass, a lusher midrange, and a slightly sweeter treble.  Ed 8 isolate better but the W3000ANV is still pretty good in that regard.  Soundstage is better with W3000ANV.

The Edition 8 in my experience (and those of others I've talked to) has quite a bit of product variation and not very tight QC parameters, so you could end up with one that sounds fairly decent or one that sounds very bright and glaring (as was the case when I exchanged by ruthenium version for the limited model). Overall however the Edition 8 is going to be brighter up top. The mids will sound more neutral compared to the W3000ANV, which has a distinct smokey timbrel coloration. The overall balance of the W3000ANV is a bit more even though, whereas the Edition 8 is U shaped and more extreme in the extremities. Bass on the Edition 8 is going to be fuller and more pronounced. Spatially, Ultrasone's S-Logic technology is more hit-or-miss, and for some it doesn't work at all. I find the Ultrasones to be a bit more holographic overall, whereas the W3000ANV has better imaging within its sound field to my ears.

 

Isolation on the Edition 8 is better, however I find the W3000ANV to be slightly more comfortable. Both have potential fit issues however. The earcups are smaller and irregularly shaped on the Edition 8, which some people find bothersome; I personally find the lack of room above the Y-split to be more problematic. The W3000ANV on the other hand uses a wing system, which some dislike. Also the angle of the cups relative to one's face can be slightly awkward, requiring more than a few people bend the arc assembly to better fit. Some people don't have any issues however, and I'm only mentioning them as another data point to be considered.

I sold the Ed. 8, the sound being a little too delicate and with treble spikes and uncomfortable (ear opening too small). I love the W3000ANV. It's quite comfortable and light and the only change I would make (because I have big ears - top to bottom) would

be to have an around the ear version, which I prefer. The W3K sound is pretty awesome.

Thanks Skylab, MuppetFace, and rgs9200m for the comparison. Is good to know the strengths and weaknesses of these 2 headphones. This will help me when I decide.

After trying many dynamics and magnetic-planars (living with them), I would say the big contest is between these 3: Fostex TH900s,  W3000anv, and Audeze LCD3s.

Each of these sounds best on different CDs from one time to another. I really can't pick a best among these 3. 

HD800s are nice on many CDs, but one of my 3 favorites will always beat the HD800s for me. (Some analytical upper mids still appear in my HD800s. Recabling

helps a lot with this, but sometimes there is a trace some times that leaves me with doubts.)

 

One of the 3 favorites may have a flaw (highs or bass) on a particular CD, but there is always one of them that is just fine, so all my bases are covered.

Unfortunately rgs9200m I am on a budget and probably can only afford 1 flagship headphone. I really need a closed headphone that isolates sound really good because can get really noisy in my house. I like your headphones choice. Have read a lot of really good things about them.

You might also like and LCD2/rev2 (I owned these and liked them too). They keep the world out nicely.
