Thanks for the kind words. If it wasn't for the volume knob problem, there is no way I am letting this baby go for $300.

True you'd ask the going $400 :P

Folks, what do you think is a fair price for an RWAK100 in good condition with full retail packaging and accessories? I'm selling mine, but might have over priced it (judging by lack of interest). I know what I need to make it worth selling, but what do you think it's worth?

OK. I'm going to be really honest with you here & tell you what I'd pay for it personally (take with a grain of salt obviously; and I do regard you very highly as a poster here BTW :-))...

Me, I'd give you AUD$600 + PayPal fees & I'd pay postage obviously (the last 2 assuming I didn't come & pick it up & pay you cash, I'd pay you ~$640 if I did)).

I understand what you paid for it, etc. But the reality is (and I hinted at this in a roundabout kinda way in my post to Hemtmaker the other day), once you start using something (anything), you can't expect to get much more than 60-65% of what you paid for it if you decide to sell it (tops, for lots of things it would be 50% or even less), obviously if something is rare or a 'collectors item'/whatever, this doesn't apply.

You might find people (on here in particular) who will pay you more for it, but I suspect many people pay overs for stuff here. Using the cost of a new RWAK100 from Vinnie = US$895 & accounting for exchange rate = roughly AUD$985 (forget shipping & forget the AUD is around $0.93; you're getting a lot less than that from both PayPal or your bank) x 60% = $591 (or ~$640 if 65%). Basically if I had to pay postage & PayPal fees/whatever, I'd round the lower amount up to $600 & pay the extras (I'd probably pay you the higher amount if I paid you cash).

This is how I arrived at my figure. As I said, take this with a grain of salt & other people may well be prepared to pay more for it.

Thanks MistahBungle - all fair points. I might revise my listing as I have a tendency to start high to gauge interest (or lack of) if I haven't seen other examples to know what something's really worth.

My portable rig pairs the AK100 with an RSA SR-71b driving a pair of Westone 4Rs re-cabled with the RSA terminated Silver Dragon v1.0 IEM.  Right angle Oyaide Rhodium plugs terminate a Silver Dragon v1.0 IEM Portable Mini Cable which handles the job of connecting the AK100 and the SR-71b.  Picture attached.

This is a significant step-up from the iPod Touch 4G/CLAS/SR-72b combo for a few reasons.

First, the front end support for 24/96 and above.  I have listened to several high-rez albums (24/96) on the rig and it is amazing – as close to a great desk top rig as I have heard from a portable rig.

Second, this is a very small package compared to the three piece CLAS set-up I had to carry around.  In fact, the AK100 has a smaller footprint than the SR-71b!

Third, the AK100 supports FLAC and WAV (I know more formats, too, but all my music is either uncompressed, lossless FLAC or WAV) seamlessly – just press play!  Previously on the iPod, I had to install two separate third party apps to play WAV and FLAC formats, respectively.  Each app used the iTunes interface to populate two different libraries on the iPod.  I had conflicts, lock-ups, etc.  No more!

While I have just begun to use the AK100, at this point, I could not be happier.

Hi, your mini to mini oyaide cable looks really neat. Do you mind if I ask how long is it end to end? I am trying to get a similar setup. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys, I have a question on the DAC functionality of the AK100.

I didn't use the AK100 as a DAC till now. I tried it out now several times with the following set up:

MacBook pro (2007) using FLACs with VLC as player -->Mac USB out to AK100 USB in --> AK100 as DAC --> JDS Labs O2 --> FAD Pandora Hope VI / LCD2 / Fischer Amps FA 003 .

I must say the listening Fun was no fun at all   - distorted or no bass at all, flat middles etc.  This sounds as if I was listening to 56 kbit MP3s or worse.

Can anybody tell me what I did wrong ?  The Files sound good on the AK100 alone or with the O2.

Thx.

I'm not familiar with Macs, but are there any settings such as default bit-rates or enhancements that might cause this issue? Also, are there any driver choices? (on Windows this would be Wasapi, DirectSound, ASIO, etc.)

Maybe the combination of AK100 & O2 as a pair gives out that flat signature?

CMIIW, AK100 and O2 both gives out a more flat and neutral sound signature which may sound boring to listen to. I myself have used AK100 as DAC but used a more energetic amp in Apex Glacier which sounded good to me, with a good kick in the low end and crisp highs.

Or it could be something else.

I am not aware of any better drivers or other possible settings. Iriver has been recognized and automatically used in the MIDI setup. But I make sure to check again if there are other driver possibilities.

Thx

Well I hink the O2 is a very neutral amp - but it doesn't distort the sound at all to my experience. What I am hearing is absolutely distorted though - it probably sounds better listening directly from the Mac.

1. Did you set AK100 volume to max?

2. Did you set your bit rate correctly? Sometimes, some players are actually sensitive to that. IDK why, but having 24bit setting on 16bit distorts like crazy.
