Optical out is NOT line out ! Optical out is Digital OUT to feed an external DAC.

Optical out Cannot be used to feed an external AMP

So you have to use the headphone output to connect to the external amps? Isn't the other 3.5mm socket a optical in and line out?

Where did I say optical out = line out ? The 6 words I wrote were exact & unambiguous.

AudioNirvana - Unless your amp/DAC (and then you need to ask yourself, why introduce another DAC ?) has optical in, correct; use a regular interconnect. No, the other socket is optical in only.

I have both and the answer in one word - Magic. really love this combo and it makes me not rush for upgrades.
however i admit that i feel 1p2 can do even better with a better DAP and amp, this is why i am eyeing Calyx M, X5 and still AK120 perhaps also S mod.

Have you ever found this combo sounding bright? I don't think X5 sounds better than rwak100..

sometimes this combo can be a bit bright but not overly bright, besides great control and separation/black space background will make you not notice this that much. i tested this with ELO Time album which is a torture test for sibilance and else and to my surprise this stack fared pretty well actually, so i would say the issue is absent. bear in mind i love clarity and sometimes do not mind some brightness when it helps overall presentation. actually i also love tubes but never a sirupy thick sound.

I've had my AK100 for a while, but only tried to play 24/176 & 24/192 tracks through the optical output today. And nothing. Lower rate files play fine through the optical output. Everything sounds fine through the headphone output.
Am I missing something basic?

I'm awaiting one AK100 MK2 and ifi iDSD this next week.

Anyone know what cable I can use with AK100? Optical? Coaxial?
I appreciate any help.

We have two Onkyo receives in my house that I have used the optical out on my AK100 with. The older one cannot play anything over 24/96, whereas the newer one plays everything. If you are running the ak100 optical out through a receiver/device that is a little bit older (Onkyo receiver that can't play is about 6-7 years old) it may not play.
