The closer I get to buying this thing, the further I am knowing the features (Due to my lack of 'digging' into the thread and expecting everything is right)

 

This doesn't support gap less playback? I listen to lots of tracks by 'Enigma' and some of their earlier albums features tracks that are meant to be gap less.

No gapless and I read somewhere they weren't going to support gapless. Why I have no idea but maybe someone can offer more information.

For that price one would expect the UI to cover the 'listening experience'

Iriver has no plans on supporting gapless which is weird...

The other thing I'll note is that the Tera Player (which I've been using) doesnt support "true gapless" as per tera-player.eu, but the gap is so small you wouldn't notice. I wish they did at least something like that xD

I upgraded the firmware back to 1.30 and changed my power options, it seems to be working again.

Ok, so how do you download the software update? I went to the site, clicked on the new firmware but nothing happens. Would seem to be straightforward but . . .

unzip the file

mount the ak100

copy the hex file to the root directory

unmount

unplug

wait for it to do its thing

click on the zip file to start the download. it worked for me. drag and drop the hex file to the AK100 root and updates automatically.

No problems for me, and I haven't read of any else having this problem here.  Have you tried resetting by pressing the power and "up" button at the same time?

 

Make sure that it is fully charged too.  I noticed that the battery calibration has sometimes been inaccurate.

 

You could also try reflashing the update.

Yep, I go the file but for some reason it will not download. My computer, I am not sure. I have downloaded other files today without problem so not sure why I can't get iRiver's file to download.

- Re: Gapless playback: that is NOT a niche "audiophile" feature as many have already pointed. It's been around since the vinyl days, there are plenty of albums that expect it. I tried to listen to a live concert the other night, and having the whole thing hacked into pieces is &$^@ obnoxious, I just stopped. Yes I could turn the whole thing into a ~1hour track, but without cuesheet support that's rather annoying too, never mind duplicating all those tracks just for the the AK100. And I like the AK100 fine otherwise, I'm not a "hater"...

 

- Another basic feature that a lot of much cheaper devices offer is SEARCH. Even with everything lossless, at 160GB storage capacity, that can still be 10k+ tracks, and it would nice to locate a track/album/artist easily. If Apple can manage that feature with just a scrollwheel, there's no excuse for a touchscreen device.

 

- And not to mention the ridiculously finicky album art support as addressed below (which btw. I'm more willing to live with than the lack of gapless playback...)

 

- That's really my main gripe: that "audiophile" should be an excuse for poor UI design/ feature support, on any device. At the AK100's price a decent fully-featured UI (purely in terms of -music- access/playback!) should be a given, and all the extra cost should go towards what makes the device stand out from the cheaper competition...

 

- Update re: nuked internal storage: finally iRiver contacted me, they obviously couldn't come up with an end-user solution, so the whole thing is going back to them... reminder to everyone not following the whole thread: do NOT attempt to reformat the internal partition or drive!! It will still show up OK on your computer but be non-existing to the AK100 which will only see the tiny, unusable, usually invisible OS partition...

 

- Things got real busy, so I didn't have time to fiddle around with the whole cover art issue, but before the thing is going back to iRiver, I did some final testing:

This flackiness is just sad, I'm not going to go through the trouble of re-tagging my entire collection, esp. with lower quality art! Maybe it's just my collection, it will be interesting to see what will happen when I'll eventually dump it on a much cheaper FiiO X3...

If you're on Windows, I found that if your AK100's firmware is out of date, their iriver Plus4 music manager program automatically detects it and will download the new firmware on to the AK.

I use a Mac computer. Can't get the firmware to download. Strange.

 

I'm on a Mac as well no problems downloading the files today.
