My quote was "wider soundstage", not sure though if you were referring to my comments though.
The SR-009s have a better overall sound stage (L to R and Front to Back).

Well I would not be surprised that the 009 would be in another league of it's own just by looking at it from a price perspective. $4500 vs $1500 is a massive difference (don't even get started on the cost of required amplification and a high quality source. Since both are the best of it's own kind (transducer based), it sort of reminds me how the HE90 used to be the best stat and the Qualia 010/R10's the best dynamics but now a unobtanium status.
Indeed I do love my HD800's but even then my other Stax gear are gaining more headtime from me, talk about speed and perfect transient and clarity from these things. If I had the money and space, I'd buy all the stats and dynamics and orthos and piezo-electrics...
That is the SR-009's biggest downfall. They certainly ain't cheap.
Yeah true, but yet again....time and huge engineering have gone into these things...not to mention from the Stax interview by Amos and Arnaud, the Stax team is fairly small...nearly all the stuff is hand-made/hand-assembled, so it's understandable one looks into how these can's are executed in the manufacturing process.

I'm just coming at it from the consumer's end. I agree a lot of engineering effort went into them and I do appreciate that (trust me...I'm an engineer myself).
This. 009 definitely felt better staged to me. Not as wide but if you want true soundstage you need speakers anyway, IMO.
You won't regret it if you go speakers. It's another rabbit hole but it's nice. Then again, you won't regret the 009 rig either.

Have you heard or owned the HD800 / 009 to conclusive say that? While I haven't heard the 009's myself, but I have other stat's to keep me company and a idea what they sound like, but given that tinkering into the 009 territory at least for me it will be more worthwhile to go for a speaker setup and I feel I may end up going the path MT is on now.
This. Again.

Yeah, the HD800s are fantastic headphones and in the top 3 headphones I've heard/owned. BUT, the SR-009s beat them in every area except for sound stage width. The differences between the SR-009s and my LCD-3s/HD800s are quite large IMO. Initially I wasn't so sure when I got my Stax rig back in November. But after a few months with them, I can easily say that IF I could only own the SR-009s vs. the rest of my dynamic headphones...it would be a no brainer. Adios dynamic cans. Thankfully, I don't have to make that decision though.
Also when considering price...The HD800 is only anywhere near the 009 when pushed with a top flight amp like the Cavalli LG. 4k for the amp, 1500 for the cans. Much closer to 009+amp considering you can order the 009 from Price Japan for 3400 right now.
The price went down again? Dang, last time I checked it was 3650, at 3400, that is too good to be true!
Now its 3655
Only problem is (according to Justin at HeadAmp) is that the wait time for the SR-009s is now like 2 months+. Must be the better pricing here in N.A.
YES...
I do not want to have headphones kept in a drawer to use always the same.
Mine arrived three weeks ago. S/N 191x .Waiting more than two mounth for them. Price + douannes and shipping cost by Fedex near $4300
Cheers
