Looking for HD280 Upgrade. K550 vs GMP 8.35 vs SRH840

Thread Starter

Been using my HD280s for 3+ years now and am looking for another closed, semi-isolated, circumaural headphone to upgrade/add to my collection. Budget is ~$300 and I do not currently have an amp, so being easy to drive is a must (for now).

As for the types of music I listen to, some days its classical but others I play dubstep and rock. So after a lot of reading in the forums it looks like the best headphones for me are between the K550, GMP 8.35, and the SRH840, though, I am leaning towards the k550s. I'll be trying these out myself, but I'd like to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks!

I have just upgraded to the k550 from my 3 year old setup (senns HD 448, Portapro, HD515, E7) and must say they are just amazing!

The difference in terms of clarity, soundstage and detail is immediately noticeable. Vocals, instruments, bass. Just so much more detailed. Though I don't have enough experience with the GMP 8.35 and the Shures, I can guarantee you that you won't regret purchasing the k550's.

the k550 has a recessed midrange but a great sound stage and a slight bass roll off.

The german has an average sound stage, deep bass and nice mids and highs with detail.

The isolation and durability goes to the german and I would take any day over both. The shures have a dry sound with good detail and no bass.
