While this is my first post, I've been reading, getting tips and worshiping this forum for more than a year now.
I have some experience with headphones by either owning them or selling them. I used to sell Protools systems
so having contact with high end/studio products was part of the business but I never purchased anything above USD150 for myself.
I love to lay back, rest and enjoy my huge FLAC collection and I can tell I really care about quality.
About a year ago I decided to add a good headphone to my small collection and based on some reviews I bought a Shure 750DJ.
No need to say when I got home I realized it wouldn't fit my big head, although I liked the audio quality a lot (put it in your head and test it while in the store before you make your decision, my 0.02 for you).
The plastic is cheap, it cranks if you move your head while wearing, but the worst is that if feels like an anvil stomping your head after 5 minutes of usage.
Browsing through this forum again, I found out some users gently bend the headband and have good results.
As you know, one day I got home drunker than usual and I broke the stretching band. Holy crap!
I took it to the Shure representative and was very glad it has a 2 year worldwide warranty coverage. A few days after, the representative sent me an email asking for the stupid serial code in the flap of the box. The box was GONE on the very second day after I got it.I knew the receipt was enough to have it completely replaced, as Shure doesn't have parts for their products.
Between the time I broke it and I got it replaced, about 5 months have passed.
Meanwhile, I got a Sennheiser HD598. I own about 5 Senny products, ranging from a PX100-II, PXC-300, PX-200 and a CX-300.
You all know you can't go wrong with a Senny, ever. The build quality of the HD598 leaves the Shure years behind.
The more you use the Senny, the lighter it gets. After a short while they disappear, you don't know you're wearing them.
They're incredibly comfortable, no cranks, they fit my humongous head and still have room for more.
Just by touching the plastic you understand the difference. And there's a BIG difference between them.
My mobile setup consists of a Fiio E9 and at home I have a Harman/Kardon AVR2600.
After all this babbling my questions to you experts are:
1) The bass on the Shure sounds *way* better than the Senny. Is it just because they're a closed back against a opened back?
2) What would be a good full size headphone to replace the 750DJ?
3) Can I compare a closed back to an open back headphone like this?
4) Mids and lows, soundstage on the HD598 are better than the 750DJ. Is it just my ears?
5) Is there a better amp to use with these phones? Please don't go above the USD500 price range.
6) Why a great brand like Shure makes good cans with bad plastic, small sized heads?
I really wish I could keep my 750DJ but since they don't fit my head I can't use them, it's a royal pain.
*ALL* my Senny's that have a headband fit my head, since the first one.
This is all for now. Thanks for reading all this.
