Ideal OSX Audio Midi Setup Settings?

I always thought that in the Audio Midi Setup app, I should set it to 96k and 24 bit for the best output quality through my DAC/Amp.

Most all of my music are ripped CDs, in Apple Lossless format with some being AAC iTunes Plus tracks as well.

But, I recently read an article stating that since CDs are 44.1k and 16 bit, that is what my settings should be set at, to match. Otherwise, the computer/DAC will have to upsample the audio tracks and something could be lost in terms of quality in that process.

Is this true?

Yes.

For "Native Rate" the DAC rate should always match the media file's rate.

Some programs, such as Pure Music and Amarra, automatically reset the rate for native play unless you specify upsampling in the preferences pane.

Thanks. I'll set it at 44.1 16bit then.

Is there any OSX software that will automatically output the native rate depending on what's being played?

The Audio Midi Setup app doesn't appear to allow for that.

Yes, BitPerfect ($9.99 on the App store).
