Nope, doesn't apply to Beats - they're not horrible enough, just 4x overpriced for what they are.

 

I wonder if anyone knows of any attenuating earplugs with a system akin to "push to talk". I know there are some expensive custom IEMs with ambient microphones...

Etymotic produces the Etyplugs, that you can carry on conversations while wearing (they have an NPR of around 12). There's some more expensive Peltor sets (those are muffs) that have PTT through their ANC. There's also some electronic earplugs from Ety:

Expensive stuff, those Etymotic MusicPro, not to mention HD-15. Looks nifty though.

I wonder if it can work as a binaural microphone or IEMs...

 

(It is a wideband microphone + limiter/amplifier + ER-4P from the looks of it.)

I don't think it can work for music playback, but the ER-4P offers pretty serious isolation on it's own (I don't think they have an ANC version of the ER-4 though); regarding as a microphone - interesting question indeed. I doubt that specific retail model can do it, but I'm sure they could whip something up for you. I know that ITU standardized acoustic investigation uses microphones in that manner, and that Etymotic is involved in binaural investigation, so I'm sure they have an offering at some level. I would not at all be surprised by a healthy four or five figure pricetag though. redface.gif
