I just bought an LOD cable and an amp a month ago, so definitely not. My current ipod touch battery life isn't great, so I may get a classic instead just for music.

I said yes, but only if the new connection allows the user the bypass the DAC natively.

You can't bypass the DAC on the current fair unless using a specific product made for that purpose, IE: CLAS or HP-P1.
There are rumors of some doing it with jailbreak and using a camera connection kit/cable.
Hopefully the new "i" products will let us bypass the DAC with a simple USB connection to any DAC, but I wont hold my breath...

I no longer have a Touch. I'll keep my Classic and LOD's though....if I want apps /games/wifi, I have Android for that.

I use my iPod Touch (4th generation) strictly as a solution to stream MOG and Spotify music services while I am at work using an HRT iStreamer paired with an O2 amp and middling quality ATH-M50 headphones. My iPod is only capable of 16-bit at up to 48kHz, so I don't see the point in trying to play high resolution lossless files with this configuration.
I'd be interested in the specifications of the newer iPod. If it is or will be capable of supporting 24-bit 96kHz playback, I might look into upgrading my equipment to take advantage of this feature. Otherwise, I'll just keep my existing iPod and eventually grab a newer model once a solution is available to connect the new device to my iStreamer, which is most likely just a new cable that will fit into the iPod correctly.
With no support for higher quality resolution, I'd just get the cheapest iPod as I would only be streaming music with very little storage requirements. I'm not able to tell the difference between Vorbis Q9 and lossless on nearly everything I listen to at 16-bit 44kHz with a cheap DAC and a $100 pair of headphones anyway.
FYI, your Touch should play 24 bit44k files like the Beatles re-releases. My 2nd gen Touch plays them fine. Have you upgraded your software?
My iOS software is current. The latest generation iOS devices will play 24-bit, but my understanding is that the output is truncated to 16-bit. So, the digital signal going to my DAC from my iPod is only 16-bit. I could be mistaken, but this is what I have read.
Ok, so...this new iTouch....it's like an iPhone now....man.... that's cool.
1- But, is there anything better inside to make the SQ better? (note: I've never listened to an iDevice in my life)
2- Siri and local iTouch music. - Cool.... But, Apple's website describes I need internet access (assuming wireless only) to use Siri ?!? But, I want to play my local music on the device!!! (Maybe Siri to be able to speak needs an internet connection?...) If that's correct....******* it.
3- iSight and Panorama - While Apple describes that on the iPhone5 it can get 28MP using this mode, because of the A6 chip, plus all the cool insides of the iPhone5, Apple mentions no details regarding the iTouch. (as in 28MP, or what, or less) The iTouch does not use A6 chip, but dual-core A5 chip.
Other things I'd like to know is:
Things like: gapless; hack for flac?; I think I've read someone complaining about "no drag and drop"?....
You know, the usual: What I can not do with the iTouch 5G.
I tell you what, at least it supports WAV... I wonder if it's worth converting my FLACs; APEs, if I decide to get it...
Apple mentions, though, that it works better with audio files of 9MB or less.

1. Buy decent headphones. Get a fostex hp_p1 or clas.
3. I like the idea of a better camera.
*FLAC. Use flacplayer app to have flac on your touch.

I am on the fence whether to get a 64gb ipod touch 4G, or get the new ipod touch 5G.

you can play your own music on the ipod touch without internet
siri needs internet to process and answer your questions, but if you dont need to use siri, then you dont need to use the internet
im planning on getting the new ipod touch touch 32gb
i dont have that much music so the size is fine with me
i think its worth the 4 inch screen- the 3.5 is way too small for me as ill be using the touch for internet as well
ive been waiting forever for an improved ipod (i never owned a portable source or even a phone) and ill be prob using the headphone out if theres no adapter connected to an amp
1.- M-100 pre-order. Check.
3.- Yeah, it's a better a camera than before, but the iPhone 5 will only get 28MP using the Panorama mode. We'll see about the iTouch, because Apple hasn't mentioned the amount MP for it, using the Panorama mode.
*FLAC: Do you mean this?: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flac-player/id390532592?mt=8
If so, no wonder Apple doesn't include FLAC support by default. *facepalm*
Oh, btw, thanks a lot! (I almost forgot to say thanks. *facepalm*)
Thanks for confirming. It would be cool if... do you know (if you have Siri) (or anyone else) if I can ask Siri to randomly play music, but exclude such and such artists? That would be so cool.

The iTouch 5G can record video in 1080P, so the 64GB could become handy...

Some people don't want to be bothered to have to convert their existing FLAC to ALAC.
