(They are not my Denons, I brought the HE400s to the meet)

Not well; the D5k's had a more withdrawn midrange and peaky treble than any planars there, its bass didn't wow me either, felt bloomy and lacking in texture even against my HE400s (not to mention HE6 and Audeze LCD2/3's bass, which were a league up still). They were all driven out of a Bryston BHA1.

Ah I see thanks. That's the same impression I had with the D2000 although apparently the D5000 had a better midrange performance than the D2k. Midrange is probably the biggest reason why I'm looking into the orthos.

+1 HE-400

Go for the he-400s. My friend has the d2ks and the he-400s, and the he-400s are clearly a class above the d2ks. The only thing that the d2ks do better is sub-bass, but in any other area, the he-400s blow them away.

The he-400 doesnt need a beefy amp too. In fact I am using it unamped with an ipod touch and the sound is quite decent.
