Well, I have returned from my local apple store. They just got the earpods in stock this morning, so I was one of the first to buy a pair. And yes...I put out the 29 bucks to get them separate from any of the iproducts to follow. I won't be getting the iphone 5 and most likely won't be getting the nano or touch. Possibly the nano.
I have always given all my apple earbuds to my kids. They love them because they are trendy and all the kids in school have them. Personally I never really liked them. Just some pretty horrific sound IMO. I have also never been able to keep them (or any earbud for that matter) in my ears without the use of foamies. So, these looked like something that might stick without the old foamies.
Well I was sadly disappointed to find that these didn't stay too well in my ears either. Better than before, but they are loose and are one head tilt away from falling out. They are better than before, but the house is very slippery and I guess I just have a shallow ear canal. So when I got home, I grabbed a pair of foamies and tried them on, even over the strange shape. Voila!! Perfect fit! I haven't cut out a hole for the front speaker or the side speakers yet. The bass ports remain open.
It took about 2 notes to discover that these wipe the floor with the original apple earbuds! I have owned so many earbuds and the ones I currently use the most are the PK2, PK3 and the Bose IE2. Personally I think these kick the PK3's ass. They do not have near the soundstage of the PK2. But then again I have not heard an earbud yet that can size up to the soundstange of the PK2. And that included my old PK1 well amped. The bass of these earpods, with the foamies on, reminds me of the bass in the IE2. But I think the mids on the earpod are superior to the IE2 by quite a margin.
You're not going to get the best treble extension with these. Not to say that it's bad...but they do lack a little sizzle. I am currently listening to Halestorms I Get Off. The bass is pretty slamming for an earbud. Granted I have these plugged into my walkman, and I do use EQ with elevated bass. I would have to say that the bass is so strong because the foamies are providing a very good seal.
They do provide a good deal of detail. When listening to Page and Plant Unledded, "The Rain Song" the orchestra comes through nicely. I wouldn't expect the kind of detail that you're getting out of a headphone like the VModa M80, but for a sub 30 dollar earbud, I'd say it ranks very high. Cost to performance ratio is quite good. I gotta give it up to Apple on this one. I am really hoping that the bass doesn't disappear as these get more hours on the drivers. It's very satisfying to me. But PLEASE KEEP IN MIND...THESE ARE MY VIEWS AND MY OPINIONS BASED ON MY HEARING AND THE WAY I LIKE MUSIC TO SOUND. MY OPINIONS WILL NOT BE SHARED 100 PERCENT ACROSS THE BOARD - GOOD OR BAD.
I am going to plug these things into my Philips GoGear Vibe in a little bit. The Fullsound will probably rattle my brain!!!
