AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition - Page 120

That's the thing. The soundstage isn't smaller, IMHO. It's just more meaty, so it doesn't have the same open space. At least that's how I perceive it. I'm A/B-ing the Annie vs Q701, and it's the same thing. The angled pads aren't giving the Q701 a bigger stage. The biggest change was literally weight of the notes, and bottom end being raised to meet the mids. Of course, a warmer, richer tone won't give the impression of the soundstage being as big unless you pay close attention.

I didn't try out the 65 pads on my K702, but if you push in on the 702s cups you'll get more weight to the notes, a smaller sound stage, and the upper mids will jump in your face.

BTW, I got the original K702 as a monitor tool to pay a close attention... and looks like this was AKG first intention. Lol, intention to attention, can be AKG new slogan.

Only memory foam is allowed to touch my body.

I tried squishing in the Q701 pads some to try and make them sound like the anniversaries, but it didn't work.  I couldn't get them to sound the same.  The Q701 would only sound a bit more shouty.

Same here. The material of the pads affect sonic characteristics. It's not just distance or shape of pads. The memory foam is different from the standard velour.

Same thing when using the pleather pads on the HE-400 vs Velour, or the same with the AX720 which came with both types of pads.

Totally agree. I put the flat K601 pads on my Q701 once and it just got less bass and a thinner sound.

This is what gave me the idea that K701 and K601 pads are less bassy than the Q701 and K702 pads.

Even K701 pads on my Q701 ruined it. I have to admit though that these K701 pads were so worn that I couldn't tell which side was angled.

They were much softer than the Q701 pads and not as hard.

K601 pads on the Q701 also make the mids too shouty. It's hard to notice at first. I couldn't live with the K601 pads on the Q701.

It's possible if the K702 angled pads are really different than K701/K601 pads, then flat K702 pads MIGHT work. Too bad they don't exist unless you sit on a pair for a month.

Someone should also try K702 or Q701 (same part#) pads on the K701 and see if they get an increase of bass.

It was worth a shot but nothing happened to my arm during the test. I did wipe the band down to make sure. I really think it just takes time to loosen the band up to mold to my head. I have sometime tonight to play so I will see how it goes and post a pic of the spot if it comes back.

pinch and roll the band between your fingers for awhile.. that will loosen it up a bit.  Good luck.. Great headphones.

How long does it normally take Frank @ AKG ( frank.rodriguez@harman.com) to respond to emails?

I emailed him 3 days ago wanting to order some K702/Q701 pads and he hasn't responded yet...

No idea but I called and he picks up immediately. You might need to do that. I remember once leaving a message and he called me back like 4 days later. It was a bit weird...

Fingers crossed that my 65th pads ship this week but highly unlikely.

How long as the 65th been out? You'd think they would have had some available a long time ago..

They've never been in stock before either..

usually 3-4 days. He does handle 4 of their subsidiaries.  But yeah... weird they don't have stock in yet; been two months since I first asked about them, pretty soon after 65's were released.

Ok, I'll wait a day or two then try again.

I think the Anniversaries were announced as early as September 2012, but I don't think they were released or buy-able until sometime in 2013.

Ya it took him a few days to get back to me too.  In fact I asked him to place an order and asked when he'd put it through but nothing so far.

Weird, he got back to me within a day.  Got my order # and everything.

I emailed him two days ago inquiring on getting some k601 pads for my k501s.  Haven't heard anything back yet.  I might try calling today.

He just replied to me.

Great price on the K702/Q701 pads at $10.40 each, with free shipping!

"Submitting" the order....
