I opened the back grill and see only plastic and some wires (photo added). Are these even fully open with that plastic wall? And for the sake of comparison I'm interested to know what's inside your Q701's?

Ok, that grill and plastic part is basically identical to the K702 then. The Q701 is probably labeled as Semi-Open from AKG due to the extra foam behind this small grill. The small grill on the Q701 also has a small nickle sized area closed off. I imagine the grill on the 65th is fully open and not closed off on the back of it.

So my guess is that this new 65th version has "special" drivers and the new pads that change the bass. Maybe it's really a lot bassier than the Q701 I have. This pair is no bass monster and I'm glad to not be wishing it had even more. Perfect quantity for me. I don't think even more would hurt it too badly though. Not really needed for me.

Same with me and I got what I wanted. I think you won't be dissapointed with the anniversaries. The extra comfortability is also a big plus. I think you and me are exactly those customers that these cans were designed for.

My K-702 do not have any foam on the outside driver, so maybe this what makes the difference. BTW, great photo.

What I was saying it that the foam doesn't make any difference.  I tried the K702 with the foam in and the Q701 with no foam and the sound didn't change and Q701 still had more bass.  Something else made them sound different.

I thought the color on these was more a darker black on black.  They look different in Salvator pics..

I took most of the pictures under fluorescent light with flash so the grey parts have some pale tone on them. In normal lightness they appear way darker. The color scheme should be dark grey on black with electric blue circle. They do look very nice in real life but I have to admit that the colors are not as dark and intense as in many promo pictures (like in the official high res image).

No. Let me start by saying that the anniversary pads are definitely tighter but not as tight as in the other K/Q 7 series headphones. For example, you know how the relatively hard pads of K/Q701's just lightly touch your head. This is not the case with the anniversaries since they sink deeper into your head. The K550's dig even deeper and give the best seal of the bunch IMO. The actual padding material in the K550's, however, doesn't seem to be so high quality memory foam as compared to the anniversaries. Have you ever tested those Tempur mattresses? The anniversary padding feels similar to that material (tempur mattresses have different stiffness levels and I feel the anniversary padding to be quite stiff). Both K550's and anniversaries are very comfortable headphones but the anniversaries win this category just because of the auto adjustable headband. Have you read up on the new Philips X1 headphones? I feel that X1's and anniversaries have lots of similarities in the headband and earpad department. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Salvatore - that does help. I consider the Q/7 series to have hard foam ear pads, but memory foam like the mattresses sounds like a huge improvement imo.
