This. There are some hobbyists who do it for money on the side, or who just like building things and will sell their excess. Their work can be very good (sometimes incredible) but for the most part I wouldn't buy somebody else's scratch build without intending to treat it like a fixer-upper.

I got to try a KGGS last year that was very good but, yeah, had the same annoying problem of separate left/right volume knobs.

What's often done with dual-mono amp volume controls is to have a single knob drive two pots using belts.

The stepped attenuator on my McIntosh is very, very good -- the volume increments in exactly the right way. The problem with stepped controls is it requires the amp builder to not only decide what kind of attenuation and taper he wants, but also the intervals between steps, and that's hard to do without buying a bunch of controls (at $$$ apiece; good ones are very spendy) and experimenting.

Digital volume controls are making stepped and balanced volume easier and cheaper to do, but most of them are pushbutton controls (or analogous actions, like pushing left and right on a toggle), so they lack the tactility.

Glad Max is going with white for the LEDs. I would have suggested going old-school -- red, or even amber if it suits the environment.

Bonus -- red and amber LEDs have mellower light than eye-piercing blue.

Red and black is the classic graphic design combination, Max. It's going to look great.

My 4.A fits more loosely than my NT 6 Pro. I've learned to accept this as a *good* thing, though.

Part of the trick of custom IEMs is that they're going to feel looser than universals -- they're supposed to. It's kind of the point, actually -- the comfort from a fit that's fully secure but without excess pressure. Some of the complaints I've seen on the Heir thread about loose fits have more to do with people associate the sense of pressure in their ear canals with being securely placed. The catch is that Heir tends to make universals with relatively shallow entry, so there's less going into the ear canal as well -- the net result can be the continuing sensation that they're about to fall out of your ears, or that they're not sealing.

What I do when I wear on my 4.A is rub my fingers next to each ear. If I can hear that, I'll reposition. It takes a couple minutes for them to properly seal, so you can also pause the music and try the rubbing-fingers test again to see if they've broken seal.

Both my customs fit well, but they fit differently.

Human flesh is pliable, so even though customs are rigid there are various ways to put them in the ears, and some fit better than others due to their design or simple variances in manufacture.

Taking DF's example, it's entirely possible he has a bad fit and I don't want to talk him out of getting a refit. But since customs fit differently than universals (and isolate sound differently than universals), it also takes time to adapt to the different tactile sensation. If he's definitely inserting them properly and he's adapted to the feel, and a good seal just isn't happening, I agree -- they have to be refitted.
