Idsynch, did you ever play the System Shock, or Marathon games? Some of the best computer games that ever were. I hope iD doesn't disappoint with Doom 4.

 

 

Sure wish someone would resurrect the Descent series, as nothing like that has been done since.

Yeah, I feel that way a lot of the time too. Sometimes I'll just stare at the titles I have piled up in my backlog, finally put a game on, and then blink a few times as I try to remember just what the hell I was even doing in the game and how it controlled. I tend to lose interest half an hour later. I've resolved to put off any further purchases until I can manage to clear out at least a few of the titles I've picked up in the last year. It's particularly difficult when you're on CAG or spot something good during seasonal sales, or need to pick up Xenoblade before its inherit rarity drives up prices threefold. :l 

 

And man... I used to own an unopened copy of Zwei. Traded it into a game store for... I don't even remember. I was young, poor, and stupid. Did you ever play PD Saga? I've always wanted to play that due to the hype, but part of me wonders just how well a title like that has even aged. It was a marvel for the time since the three dimensionally constipated Saturn had tremendous issues with rendering 3D graphics, but those wizards at Sega were able to program transforming dragons and everything. I also understand that GameTap had ported the code to PC but that never seemed to have materialized unfortunately. Part of the reason why I'm securing Xenoblade in case a similar situation develops

I played SS2 maybe a decade back since there was a ton of hype surrounding it. It had tremendous atmosphere and aged very well, I'm not quite sure why I don't find Dead Space 2 frightening when the two titles share a very similar environment. Marathon is a no. I'll have to check that out sometime. 
 
Re Doom 4: There were some leaks of production materials and even screens, but that's a title with a troubled history as well. I remember Carmack talking about how he wanted to lower the framerate in iD tech 5 by half so that he could get dozens of monsters on screen without sacrificing overall detail. I'm not sure how the use of that engine will impact Doom 4 as it's in severe need of reworking. The megatexture engine yields impressive results when your field of vision is limited to whatever's in front of you, but turn your head and bam, the entire world is in shambles. I'm pretty sure Bethesda is less than pleased with Rage's performance both critically and commercially, iD is a team that's struggling to maintain relevance in a post CoD world, so a title like Rage was supposed to put them back on the map. I hope the negative press they received is forcing them to deliver a quality product. Worst case scenario is that they shutter their doors like so many other studios this gen. The perpetual chase for bigger, badder, shinier has had an awful impact on the industry, I really hope the coming gen allows middle tier devs to flourish once more, but I just don't see it happening.

The Marathon games and System Shock games pioneered a lot of the stuff you see in FPS's today. Had some of the best villains, too. Durandal and SHODAN were wickedly cool. Here's more on Marathon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_%28video_game%29

It's what Bungie did before Halo, if you can imagine that!

I can believe it, definitely. Especially in terms of adding "RPG" elements to FPS. Many FPS now have upgrade systems and branching skill trees. And Shodan is totally GlaDoS' grandma

@Id: Zwei's the only Panzer Dragoon game I own.

 

Also, Descent was the first 3D video game I ever played :).  I still think it has some of the best sound design of anything I've played, or the most nostalgia inducing, at least.  I start thinking about it every time I see Asr's avatar.  I don't know if I'd want a reboot, though.  Part of the charm for me was how clean the environments were,  I'd hate to play a new HD one where the mines, well, look like mines.
