Considering in the past I've tried to talk Romy into pouring some of her creative energy into serious writing I would like nothing better then to see some of her penmanship on the audio enthusiast blog a sphere.

 

Yes, I did go, but I chose not to write about it because I didn't get to hear much. I was literally there for 10 minutes and had to go.

Hmm I really should've highlight some of the writings here on this thread in my blog for the audiophile section, since it's more to record my 'journey' (sorry MF) and experience in audiophiledom. And the walls of text from the likes of MF, tomscy, DF and others here worth quite a lot of XP to me.

1 - blogs are a bit boring, uninteractive (compared to a forum), and not very professional these days since they're so easy to make, and so common.

 

2 - otononikki looks stylish but sounds weird, like some kind of Japanese fish.

 

I had them on pre-order from here, but finally cancelled and bought them locally when the Austrian Senn distributor told me they had a unit in stock.

 

But I can highly recommend fair-kaeuflich.de, they were great to deal with, even after my cancellation.

 

 

Actually, the IE800 are in some way a medium, with only slightly bloated bass and only slightly thinnish treble. Whether it is a *happy* medium is in the ear of the beholder...

 

The thing is, apart from their design shortcomings, they're not bad at all. But it seems like many head-fiers are so used to hype and shilling, that any more level-headed assessment of a product will instinctively trigger those "don't like them, huh?" remarks. 

I think that in many cases where other companies would get a pass on their divergence from fidelity, Sennheiser's held to task for it and become typecast. People make too much of it sometimes.

Sennheiser's relatively slow turnover of products at the higher end of their product range gives the punters a lot of time to spend with things and get tired of them, too.

I always liked the phrase "ongaku otaku", but that's been claimed already.

Collaborative blogs can be fun for a while, but they require more effort than it seems to keep them lively, and I'm not in a position to volunteer more of my time to things when I'm not even keeping up with things I've already promised. :P

Doing my audio writing here for free, and letting Jude & co skim a little ad revenue off it, is OK with me, in that he's providing the hosting and community services, and all I have to do is type when I feel like it. These days I think that if I was going to do a topical blog, it would have to be more diverse in subject matter than audio alone. And, of course, if the topics are too diffuse, it's hard to hold an audience who wants to read authors who reliably scratch a particular itch.

So my future as a professional blogger is in doubt, is what I'm sayin'.

I guess that's the other thing: I feel more inclined these days to try to be even-handed in assessing things I've used for a fair amount of time. Pages of nuanced thought is not as effective as clickbait full of strongly stated opinions of products ripped from their boxes just minutes before (and captured on video).

Great read, thanks for sharing! Felt a bit lost amidst the Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, Edward Cullen and Stephanie Meyer analogies, but I think I got where you're coming from w/r/t JH customs.

 

 

Can't speak for full-sized headphones, but I think the IE8/80 have been a huge success, even though they diverge quite boldly from fidelity.

 

Speaking of which, if we're talking about portable audio (and ambient noise), fidelity becomes much harder to determine. The IE800 sound undoubtably bassy in a quiet room, but surprisingly more balanced once I'm out of the door.

 

I think blogs can work if they're applied the right way, but it requires a lot of work, and basically near full-time (or at least part time) dedication. The only thing is to build up a readership, and if a blog is self-selective in its viewers, it might be difficult to get any interaction going; that's why Headfonia is structured the way it is; it has shiny pictures and hyperbole = lots of readers. I actually wouldn't mind being part of the coalition of the willing if others are as well.

 

Japanese fish are high quality, though.

 

 

I agree. Senn seems to have hit their target, but you can't please everyone in every situation. Even with those fiddly design bits

I have to say, I was definitely influenced by the diary thread when I got the idea; it came in the wake of the now MIA "impressions contest" --- I wanted to try something that would effectively describe my internal thoughts but that wouldn't come off as opinionated, but would rather highlight our naturally capricious and whimsical attitudes toward this hobby. I think just hanging around the diary members really rubbed off on me and the process by which I approached the the content.

 

 

Sorry about that! It was definitely a bit forced, and definitely doesn't resonate with most over a certain age (heck, I'm only 27 and I don't even watch/read those movies/books) but I figured if people are at least mindful of internet pop culture they'd understand the satire.

I'm not sure if I have asked this question before (seems familiar, so the answer is probably yes ) - on CIEMs, do most of the newer, more "generic" CIEM makers that have cropped-up fairly recently use the same handful of Knowles BA transducers? If they do, then what else will drive differences in the way they sound? Are there crossover circuits between the transducers in multi-driver CIEMs? I would imagine that Westone, JH Audio or UE might commission their own OEM transducers from Knowles (or whomever), but it seems unlikely the smaller Asian houses would do that - would they?
