Rants about marketing and speculation in photography.
"One thing I did like was that the camera was announced and then available to buy shortly afterwards. This is how it should be. The rumour > leaks > announcement > review > pre-order > limited quantities available cycle has now got ridiculous. How much of this is orchestrated by the companies and how much its impossible to keep things quiet because of the number of people involved is difficult to estimate. But how many others think that this is becoming REALLY tedious. I'm personally now completely ignoring these immediate post-announcement reviews with pre-production cameras and jpg. samples taken from the few battered cameras that are couriered around the world to sites who make their living from "being nice" to the companies who send them cameras. The hyperbole, the fanboy (or opposite) speculation, and above all the general innacuracy of whats written is becoming ridiculous. Its usually worse with some retro "lookaleica" and its currently in full swing with the Sony RX1, which is assumed to have a similar sensor to the D600. The latest headline is "It is my expectation that the Zeiss Sonnar 35/2 will outperform the Leica 35/2 Summicron-M" Yeah Yeah. OK I'll sell everything I own on your say-so. Then of course, you actually read the piece and discover that the person making the above assertion hasn't actually even had his hands on a camera!! Unbelievable but true."

YES. The ESW10JPN was one of the best on-ears ever IMO. Too bad this looks pretty much the same as the ESW9, aesthetically ...??
Also reports of FAD's newest fullsized headphones. Apparently they'll be releasing three models ranging from plastic to metal and in price. Apparently it's not going to be much more than $1500-ish for their TOTL model. Reports are favorable thus far.

I paid $1k even for my pair of NOS YH-1000s. I don't think you'll ever find them NOS for less nowadays from anyone who knows what they're doing, so if you can get them for $600 you'd be a fool not to do it.
Be forewarned however that they're not the most durable headphones. Tell your friend to handle them by their frames and not the earcups, as they can snap off (the pivoting joint connecting them is very weak). Also be aware the drivers can "stick" and have problems in the YH-1000 in particular. I know someone very experienced who can repair them however if this should ever happen.

@MF, what do you mean by the drivers 'sticking'? Is it only in the YH-1000, or it's just more prevalent with that one and it can happen with the whole YH line?

Just what it sounds like: a driver gets "stuck" and as a result the playback is compromised. From what others say, the most noticeable effect is that the driver in question gets quieter. Playing loud music can sometimes help "unstick" the driver. This isn't just limited to the YH-1000, as I've heard stories about some of the other Yamahas doing it too. The YH-1000's drivers however can have other problems, and as a whole they are fairly delicate headphones. Over time these problems are compounded due to age. I know someone who has successfully repaired a few sets, however.

Thanks for that. Now I'm worrying about my YH-1 I left at Malaysia. Didn't have enough safe space in my bags. Had to left them home.
