I'm glad you did. It is what it is. It's not the only genre I listen to (I like everything except really country stuff - the " I siiing to my horse" type stuff, and the "praise the devil" type of metal), but I have an appreciation for it.

Well this is interesting. Humble Indie Bundle just launched another bundle, only this time it's ebooks. Neil Gaiman, John Scalzi, Cory Doctorow, and few others. Not to say I know of their works, but I have heard of them at the very least.

It's also effing huge and takes forever to render on mobile devices and then I can't even see the effing thing. I won't be visiting head-fi from any mobile device until it goes away. It's destroying my data cap for no use to me whatsoever.

That's not bad, really. I'm talking about the video, not the music (it's rubbish). The cinematography and effects are quite good, it's a lot like watching a Guy Ritchie film.

For metal and the like, it's about theater. Most in that genre are real pussycats, they're just having fun and they don't take themselves very seriously, like Alice Cooper. He'll make a deal like Faust and then get his head chopped off one night, and the next day he's laughing about it at a charity golf tournament. Metal itself is an acquired taste and I was raised on it, lots of Black Sabbath and Led Zep, at 10 I could even sing all the AC/DC Bon Scott songs by heart. I was inconsolable after he OD'd. So, my tastes are impacted by cultural influence, like anyone else. Never did get into the harder stuff, though, like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide.

For me, I believe it comes down to a couple factors: is the singer(s) actually singing, or are they only talking, growling, or screaming? Is there coherent melody, or an artistry at work that I appreciate on an emotional or technical level?

Rap/Hip-hop lovers shouldn't feel bad, though, I feel the same negative response when I hear Pop-Country, so it isn't exclusive to one genre.

The thing about rap/hip hop is that there's a fair amount of rhetorical art in the good rappers and there's some productive art in good sampling. I am no particular fan of Kanye West, but what he did on My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy is pretty remarkable.

I don't feel bad because you don't like it. People can like or not like what they want. It's just that the genre is more complex and artful than you give it credit for.

I'm doing American Kenpo, a derivative of the Ed Parker method.  I'm still a beginner; I should be purple belt in the next couple of months.  Kenpo AFAIK is less physically demanding than Kung Fu.  I have a good friend who used to do Wing Chun and the movements were very physically demanding from the perspective that doing some of the techniques requires intense physical conditioning.  Kenpo, on the other hand, is mostly quick simple movements and works on speed and overwhelming an opponent while simultaneously defending.

 

The school I go to is also primarily focused on defense.  Generally a 1 hour class is about 20 minutes of hard workout, 20 minutes of learning the "by the book" technique or form, and then the last part of the class the head instructor comes in and teaches variations and application.  Like you, I feel very positive about the effect martial arts has on my life.  I'm still pretty overweight, but much stronger and more toned than when I started, and planning to stick with it.
