Well, the genre itself has no appeal to me. Sampling music, then exaggerating the bassline and talking over it doesn't impress me. Also there's the demeaning and often misogynistic lyrics, and it's simply impossible for me to take in the "thug" and "gangsta" image with a straight face. There are exceptions, but I'd rather just enjoy all the other music out there.

It just seemed like gagging was an over the top reaction to a complex genre. Most of the mainstream rap does do the over emphasized bass thing, but it's not all that's out there. Still, de gustibus. Thanks for explaining.

What you're describing is more "prap hop" (pop-rap-hip hop) than what true rap is. The genre was born from a need to tell the story of the ghetto raised youth. The majority of the crap you hear nowadays is just that: Crap.

 

I hope you'll give it a chance. I recommend starting with The Roots' Undun album. Listen deeply to the lyrics, and maybe you'll gain an appreciation for the genre like I did. The instrumentation is fantastic, and they even end it with a series of classical instrumental pieces that summarize the entire album.

Undun is a fantastic album. One of the better hip-hop releases out there. There's a lot of incredible stuff going on in that genre, especially on the Strange Music label, over the last few years. However, I'd also suggest something from The Roots before looking at that stuff. It's a little out there.

I used to be really into Hip Hop but once you realize that a lot of the rappers/lyricists are just putting artificial depth into their words and act like morons in real life, it ruins a lot of the experience. The Roots definitely are great though, and they live up to their reputation as great musicians.

An update on the M-100 front, I know Mr eke2k6 (Mr Eke would be such a curazzyyy last name in real life) has shown some interest so I thought I'd post some updated pics on this thread.

Val Kolton is currently in Japan and AnakChan had a chance to hook up with V and have dinner with him and some associates. AnakChan is the fellow in the center.

For those interested, the very first review has been posted as well as some pictures. Not the most detailed review as far as sonics are concerned but the fellow was obviously trying to do a good job and seemed pretty excited over his new can.

Differently then I expected, I loved the shiny black shields as much as the brushed metal ones, my engraving wasn't prefect, but this is surely my picture's resolution fault. The memory pads are freaking comfortable as the headband as well! I don't have the biggest ears ever, but the ear cups fit better than i thought, and the foldable system looks strong.

 

The noise isolation was kinda weaker comparing with the DJ-PRO 3000 in mute, but while playing it does an wonderful job really.

 

The sounding is just amazing! deadhorse.gif The improvement upon the DJ-PRO 3000 it's simply huge! Trebles are perfect, it is right where it should be. Middles are amazingly measured, I'd say if it had more middles, it would ruin this amazing headphone. Bass are pretty solid, not a full-body feeling, but pretty close, seriously great! The distinction between treble and middle it's perfect, made my experience listening Hendrix an whole new stuff, wish the distinction from middle and bass was that much clear, but it sort of mix/loses itself in it's transition. It's just a detail, not an issue at all. The bass is quite deep just enough, really enjoyable. There is not that much to compare actually 'cause the DJ-PRO 3000 is an alcoholic grape juice, while the M-100 is the best vintage wine.

I really loved the feeling I got while listening, I tested from Hendrix to Tchaikovsky, even nature sounds, I heard all perfect through the M-100.

 

Who loves true deep bass will be kinda sad if looking for extra bass, it really has that punching feeling, but isn't the same as bass heads cans. I'd really say that after 3 1/2 hours the M-100 sounds quite better, specially on the bass I feel. And yet really comfortable, nothing tries to scalp your head.

 

Concluding the M-100 definitely worth each penny I've invested, the waiting time, and the delays! Even I got a couple of details as the broken screws while taking them off, but I really wonder myself how really great headphone it is. Sounds amazing, surely I believe it'll sound even better with an amp. I tested on my Fender, witch isn't a headphone amp, but gave me wow results. And honestly I hope my review could help everyone as a first impression simple review. I'm in love with my M-100 biggrin.gif

 

Btw the double input gives lots of uses! And I kinda liked the increase on gain when using both jacks. Isn't that much but reminds me my guitar amps devil_face.gif

 

I gotta thank everybody here 'cause if I hadn't been among you all in this thread I'd probably hit my face on the ground for buying a garbage can or even same quality as I already have with the DJ-PRO 3000. I'm glad I met you guys!L3000.gif And surely no less important I gotta thank Val and all V-MODA team for this great success!!!!! I'm definitely looking forward for all devices that'll come up!

 

PS: In case of anyone gets curious, the guitars were '72 Telecaster reissue with deluxe humbuckers, actually customized by the last owner, while the other one is a 2004 Memphis strato all customized with stickers from my friends and all tuned-up by myself with new stainless frets, rosewood fretboard, golden nut, a neck single coil HS 3, middle pickup original Memphis and bridge Seymour Duncan humbucker. 1M potentiometers, new air free wires and interior body copper shielding. beerchug.gif

I listened to Undun. I liked the music, but then the racial slurs and overabundance of profanity started and I lost interest. It was a case of having a larger vocabulary, but still saying the same thing. I know there are serious social issues in this great wide world, and I'm aware that music is a way of expressing your feelings about them, but that doesn't mean I choose to hear about it during my leisure time.

Let's look at Rage Against the Machine, or specifically Zack de la Rocha. He's a rich dude, with >$25M in the bank and a fleet of exotic cars, who got that way by acting like he's angry at other rich dudes, and then doubled his recording and concert money by investing it in Apple and Bain Capital. Seriously? How do I know this? Our fund managers play golf together. Want to see some real "rage"? Let someone key Zack's Bentley while he's sipping a latte at Starbucks. wink.gif

Okay, I'm a little jaded, admittedly, and it does color my world view. But there are times when the celebrity hypocrisy gets to be just a little too much. lol

In Russia there is a genre which is popular among criminals and alike where they whine about their tough life etc. ( "Russian chanson"). Russian rap exploits the same themes of the urban underclass and the criminal underworld. That's not what I would listen in my leisure time for sure.

Someone shows up on the forums and says something generalized like "hey, I really hate rock music!"

 

In response, some people 'round here bristle and ask "well what rock are you talking about?!"

 

This imaginary interlocutor starts rattling off a list of crap that plays on popular teen radio stations.

 

"Hold on here. That's just top 20 stuff. That's not rock! There's so much more to the genre than that, man!"

 

"Yeah and besides" someone adds, "the genre of rock is pretty diverse. You can't just say 'rock' without being more specific."

 

A third audiophile chimes in: "Very true. Not to mention there's a whole rich history to explore."

 

"Rock was so much better in my day"

 

"Yeah. I mean, you can't compare the classics to stuff on the radio."

 

"All the good rock is underground these days anyway. Indie rock."

 

....

 

Now just replace the genre with rap.

I was thinking for a while about why I find it hard to like heavy metal. Turns out it's not because of the visual trappings, sonic textures and arrangements. It's because for forty years, no heavy metal singer had provably sold their soul to the devil. They were all lying. I can't abide that.
