Last time I checked yes they were still around although they are only a former shadow of what they once were. I'm keeping my eyes on that thread for more info and hopefully impressions. If there's a company who can put out a audiophile DAP whose UI works seamlessly like say iOS or Android it's iRiver. I just hope they don't go the Android route (doubtful) and the player itself isn't kneecapped, as in proprietary file support or sync software. Dual microSDHC slots that supports 64GB's with another 32 GB's onboard and playback support up to 192 Khz/24 bit, I'm loving it already. I wonder what kind of battery life this thing will be capable of and what their take will be on creating playlists.

To be entirely honest, I kind of built my desktop computer without knowing what I was doing. I mean, I knew how much I wanted to spend and what parts were and weren't quality for the price, but I don't think I fully realized what I wanted it for, let alone understood what was out there on the desktop replacment market at the time, back in mid August.

Had I been able to talk to you sooner, I would have definitely forgone a desktop for a 17.3" multimedia computer, like that Samsung. I agree with you --specifically in the 17.3" market-- that laptops are really stating to bridge the gap. As it stands now, I'm stuck with a desktop in a huge Cooler Master Haf 912 that rates 7.7 in processing, 7.7 in RAM, 7.9 in hard disk and 7.1 in desktop/gaming graphics, because I bought a Gigabyte HD6850OC for $150 instead of buying a better card. The 700Z7C-01US rates similar to my current desktop for not too much more, and I aready have a good monitor/speakers/Model-M keyboard at my desk.

I know, boo hoo hoo first world problems (I do truly appreciate the power that I have now, as I've been using the same old HP Elite since 2007) but I'm still a little frustrated because I just don't have any time to use my main computer by the end of the day. My Fujitsu's screen isn't big enough for assignments, and the school computers are way too limited; they're basically only good for web browsing, if you don't mind being logged... I'd much rather browse the web on a DNS Encrypted, peer protected laptop.

 

I think the Clevo PC you linked is great. Its incredible to think that with the Clevo I could build a laptop with the GTX 680M and FHD 90% NTSC Color Gamut display for around $2500, while still including Windows 7 Proffessional, 16GB's of 1600 RAM, a 750gb HD (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) and 128gb Crucial M4 as OS Drive!

However, the question that is ultimately guiding my personal laptop purchase is this: Will it allow me to get 60 FPS on most games at between medium to high settings?

The 700G7C will allow me to run every game on the market right now at 60PFS minimum on high with low filtering, and many on ultra. The 700Z7C will definitely not do that, but your getting a much thinner computer with the same processing power and a 4 and half hour battery for less. The question is a matter of how long that 40nm GTX 675 will be relevant. I [hypothetically speaking] could buy the 700G7C from Microsoft today on sale for $1700, an incredible value. Is it worth spending $800 more on a GTX680M equiped Clevo that should max out every game coming out for a long while?

 

Would such a gaming laptop even last that long? $2500 is a lot of money, so realistically speaking, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer seems like a great place to cut my losses

Secondly: DF, any impressions of the M100 from experienced/"old" head-fiers yet? Sorry to inconvenience you like this, but I'm not going to wade across a lot of ... fanboy 'output' to look for said impressions. You could point to a general page and I will go wade through it still though.

Not an inconvenience at all, don't bother wading through the 400 plus page thread just yet you'll be wasting your time. The first units only began to ship Friday and the rest should all be shipping by the end of this coming week, hopefully. So far only a handful of us pre order people have gotten their shipping confirmations in the mail, unfortunately I'm not one of them. The only head-fier I know who has an actual M-100 is AnakChan who has Val's ear and who is a very experienced head-fier and will be posting some final impressions soon on the VTF-100 thread. I think he's intentionally holding back his observations until everyone else starts getting their units but I'm not sure about that. The first real or semi dependable impressions, depending on whose posting them, should start showing up I'm guessing Wednesday or Thursday. Some US people picked 2 day shipping and it's a holiday in Canada and the US this coming Monday so the first units should begin to arrive in peoples hands either Tuesday or Wednesday. Take what you read early on with a grain of salt because this can has got to be one the most crazy anticipated headphones to be released in awhile. People seem to literally be salivating to get these headphones. Either these will sound crazy great or the hype will have gone so overboard they'll be a huge flop for people, time will only tell. Once I get mine I'll be posting my impressions on this thread if you have any more questions feel free to ask on the thread or PM me. I'm only to glad to be helpful if I can.

To be honest, I haven't seen even one ultrabook that is even remotely comparable to a normal laptop in the price performance ratio. Most ultrabooks in my experience are about 50%-100% more expensive than their fatter counterparts (especially when looking at Acer and other cheaper brands). On the other hand, I only compare prices in Sweden - but I can't imagine them being much different elsewhere.

 

Just like you, I think that ultrabooks are the future. The thinness and the ability to put pretty good hardware inside of them is a winning concept. The only thing they have going against them right now, in my experience, is the price.

No laptop will ever last "that long". Not when it comes to FPS in games. However, I feel pretty certain that at least the higher end graphics cards today will survive a few years in terms of being able to put on a good performance. I think that the gpu in the samsung you mention, the gamer edition, will last a while to come. The thing about that particular gpu is that it's a fermi based model which consumes more power than the kepler counterparts. Perhaps you'd want to wait for a while though, because nvidia will release the kepler counterpart of that particular gpu, and I imagine some laptop brands using that instead of that fermi one. On the other hand, that particular one seems to be pretty darn good otherwise, and if you don't need the graphics performance to be "the best" then you will have a great laptop at your hands.

 

The thing about Clevo is that it's upgradeable. You can either upgrade the gpu to a 680M, 7970M or even future graphics cards. I think that's a good investment because you can keep yourself up-to-date with the technology at the same time as keeping the laptop. That's a real good bonus for the Clevo imo.

 

Admittedly though, you'd be pretty well off with the Samsung. Despite the older technology, the graphics card is still one the best mobile graphics cards.

For people who own or have tried the Fostex TH 900s:

I'm planning on buying these some time down the road if they are still available and I was wondering if anyone had amp recommendations. I need to factor it into my purchasing decision in terms of price.

Vizio isn't exactly an example I'd bring up to make a point.

However, there were some ultrabooks in there that seemed okay for the price, but again, I'm mainly looking at Swedish prices where most of those are at $1000. For about $600 we get laptops with significantly better specs than most normal ultrabooks. Discrete graphic cards, hybrid disks, i7 processors and more RAM. Those parts makes for better performance than the Vizio for the same or even less money. As said, the only real good thing about it, performance wise, is the SSD.

Again, I don't disagree that ultrabooks are the future, but I don't think we're there yet. At least not in terms of performance.
